This part of ISO 12947 is applicable to the assessment of the appearance change of specimens covering all textile fabrics including nonwovens and fabrics where the specifier indicates the end performance as having a low abrasion wear life. This method differs appreciably from those in ISO 12947-2 and 12947-3. NOTE Further introductory comments are given in ISO 12947-1.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 12947-4:1998 - "Textiles - Determination of the abrasion resistance of fabrics by the Martindale method - Part 4: Assessment of appearance change" specifies a visual assessment method for measuring appearance change after Martindale abrasion. It applies to all textile fabrics (including nonwovens) and to cases where the end-use expects a low abrasion wear life. This part complements other Martindale parts (apparatus, mass loss, specimen breakdown) and differs appreciably from ISO 12947-2 and -3.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: Circular specimen is rubbed against a standard abrasive fabric in a Lissajous translational motion; the specimen holder also rotates freely. Appearance change is assessed either after an agreed number of rubs or by determining the rub interval when a defined surface change occurs.
- Apparatus: Uses the Martindale abrasion tester per ISO 12947-1. Test mass of the specimen holder and spindle is specified as (198 ± 2) g.
- Specimen and abradant dimensions: Typical specimen diameter ≥ 140 mm; abradant diameter 38 mm; felt substrate diameter 140 mm; foam backing 38 mm (tolerances given).
- Conditioning and atmosphere: Standard atmosphere per ISO 139: 20 ± 2 °C and 65 ± 5% relative humidity.
- Sampling and preparation: Sampling rules referenced to ISO 2859-1; at least three specimens; handling to minimize tension; special guidance for patterned, stretch (elastane) and pile/cord fabrics (Annex A).
- Test intervals: Predefined rub intervals are provided (series a, b, c) - e.g., for expected low rub counts (
