ISO 13130:2011 specifies requirements and tests for desiccators and vacuum desiccators intended for general laboratory purposes such as drying of substances or material.
Abstract
Overview - EN ISO 13130:2011 (Laboratory glassware - Desiccators)
EN ISO 13130:2011 specifies requirements and test methods for desiccators and vacuum desiccators used for general laboratory drying and storage of moisture‑sensitive substances and materials. Published by CEN/ISO, the standard covers geometry, materials, construction, tightness, pressure strength and thermal shock endurance for laboratory glassware desiccators.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Types:
- Type 1 - Vacuum desiccators
- Type 2 - Non‑vacuum desiccators
- Material: Borosilicate glass 3.3 in accordance with ISO 3585; glass must be free from strain and defects; optional brown colouring for light‑sensitive contents.
- Nominal sizes & series: Series A and Series B with defined nominal diameters (examples: 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 mm). Standard defines designation format (e.g. Desiccator ISO 13130 – 200 – 1B).
- Design & construction:
- Slightly concave base (stable, may have protective rim or picked circumference).
- Stepped side to support perforated plates.
- Part‑spherical lid with flat flange; lid fitted with vacuum connection or knob (min. 38 mm).
- Vacuum‑tight flanges must be ground plane and interchangeable; a ring‑groove for an elastomeric seal is permitted.
- Vacuum connection options: conical ground glass socket 24/29 (ISO 383), external screw thread, socket for rubber stopper, or ground knob with sleeve/tube (bore min. 2 mm).
- Tightness & leakage: Leakage rate limit is specified in the standard (see ISO 13130 for the exact value and test procedure).
- Pressure strength: Vacuum desiccators must withstand external pressure tests (e.g., 2 bar for 60 s or 3 bar for 10 s) per Annex A.
- Thermal shock: Type tested to withstand thermal shock endurance of 80 °C in accordance with ISO 718.
- Marking & packaging: Permanent marking (manufacturer, nominal size, type, optional ISO number) and individual protective packing.
Applications and users
- Practical uses: drying chemicals, storing hygroscopic samples, short‑term vacuum drying, protection of moisture‑sensitive materials.
- Typical users: laboratory equipment designers and manufacturers, QA/QC and compliance teams, procurement officers, laboratory managers, and testing laboratories that validate glassware to standards.
