Specifies the standard reference conditions of temperature, pressure and humidity to be used for measurements and calculations carried out on natural gases and similar fluids.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 13443:2005 (ISO 13443:1996 incl. Corr.1:1997) defines the standard reference conditions of temperature, pressure and humidity for measurements and calculations on natural gas, natural‑gas substitutes and similar gaseous fluids. Its primary aim is to provide a single, consistent basis for reporting volumetric, densimetric and combustion properties (volume, density, relative density, compression factor, calorific values and Wobbe index), reducing ambiguity in international measurement and custody transfer.
Key topics
- Standard reference conditions: the ISO base for a real dry gas is 288.15 K (15 °C) and 101.325 kPa.
- Properties covered: volume, density, relative density, compression factor (Z), superior/inferior calorific values (molar, mass and volume bases) and Wobbe index. Definitions reference ISO 6976:1995.
- Conversions: Annex A supplies conversion factors between common metric reference conditions; Annex B provides equations to convert properties from other reference conditions (valid typically for 270–300 K and 95–105 kPa).
- Notation guidance: best practice is to include the reference conditions in the symbol (e.g., V(15 °C, 101.325 kPa)) to avoid misinterpretation.
- Annexes: normative and informative annexes include symbols (C), example calculations (D), national usage summaries (E) and bibliography (F).
Practical applications
- Custody transfer and commercial reporting: ensures consistent billing and energy accounting by reducing errors due to differing reference bases.
- Gas measurement and metering: manufacturers and test labs use the standard to calibrate equipment and report measurements on a common basis.
- Pipeline and transmission operators: apply standard conditions for flow calculations, energy balancing and contractual exchanges.
- Regulators and standards bodies: adopt or reference EN ISO 13443 to harmonize national measurement regimes.
- Energy traders and auditors: rely on consistent calorific and Wobbe index reporting for trade settlements and fuel quality assessment.
Who should use it
- Gas engineers, metering and instrumentation manufacturers, laboratories, pipeline operators, utility companies, energy traders, regulators and contract/quality managers involved with natural gas measurement, custody transfer and quality assurance.
Related standards and notes
- Normative reference: ISO 6976:1995 (calculation of calorific values, density and Wobbe index).
- The standard recognizes that national law or contracts may require alternate reference conditions and provides conversion tools (Annexes A & B) to translate values to the ISO basis.
- Includes Corrigendum 1:1997; published by CEN as EN ISO 13443:2005 for European adoption.
Keywords: EN ISO 13443:2005, ISO 13443, natural gas standard reference conditions, reference temperature and pressure, Wobbe index, calorific value, gas custody transfer, conversion factors, compression factor, gas density.
