Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 13534:2000 (CEN adoption of ISO 13534:2000) provides guidelines and requirements for the inspection, maintenance, repair and remanufacture of hoisting equipment used in the petroleum and natural gas drilling and production industries. The standard covers a broad range of hoisting items - from crown-block sheaves, travelling blocks and hooks to elevators, rotary swivels, motion compensators, riser- and wellhead-running tool components and safety clamps - with the objective of maintaining serviceability and safe operation.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope of equipment covered: crown-block sheaves and bearings; travelling and hook blocks; block-to-hook adapters; drilling, tubing and sucker-rod hooks; casing, tubing, drill-pipe and drill-collar elevators; rotary swivels and adapters; power swivels/subs; spiders (when used as elevators); dead-line tie-downs; motion compensators; kelly spinners (if used for hoisting); riser- and wellhead-running tool components; safety clamps.
- Written procedures: users/owners must establish documented procedures for inspection, maintenance, repair and remanufacture for each item of hoisting equipment.
- Joint development: procedures should be developed or updated jointly by user/owner and manufacturer when possible, accounting for application, loading, environment and usage.
- Personnel qualification: NDT inspectors must be certified (for example per ISO 9712) and welders qualified to recognized standards. Inspectors need assembly drawings, critical-area definitions and rejection criteria.
- Inspection categories and criteria: inspections may be driven by time intervals, measurable wear limits, load-cycle accumulation, non-performance, environment, operational history or regulatory requirements. Visual daily checks for cracks, wear, loosening and deformation are emphasized.
- NDT and critical areas: critical load-carrying regions must be identified; in absence of drawings, all primary-load-carrying areas are considered critical. Common NDT methods include MT, PT, RT and UT.
- Maintenance, repair, remanufacture: definitions and distinctions are provided (e.g., remanufacture involves special processes or re-machining). Manufacturer guidance is required for special tooling, parts and procedures.
- Load testing: guidance on performance and proof load tests to verify serviceability.
- Documentation: equipment files and activity records (inspection reports, repairs, load tests) are required.
Applications and Who Uses It
- Intended for operators, drilling contractors, equipment owners, manufacturers and maintenance/service organizations in the petroleum and natural gas sectors.
- Practical uses: developing inspection and maintenance programs, qualifying NDT and welding personnel, establishing repair/remanufacture procedures, conducting load tests, and maintaining equipment history and compliance records.
- Useful for safety managers, mechanical engineers, rig supervisors and third‑party inspection providers.
Related Standards
- ISO 9712 (Non‑destructive testing - qualification and certification of personnel) - normative reference in EN ISO 13534:2000.
- ISO 13534 is based on API RP 8B (as noted in the standard’s introduction) - relevant industry guidance for hoisting equipment practices.
Keywords: EN ISO 13534:2000, hoisting equipment inspection, drilling equipment maintenance, repair and remanufacture, petroleum and natural gas, NDT certification, load testing, equipment documentation.
