ISO 13856-3:2013 establishes general principles and specifies requirements for the design and testing of those pressure-sensitive protective devices, with or without an external reset facility, that are not specified in either ISO 13856‑1 or ISO 13856‑2, and the majority of which are produced for specific applications and are not available as "off-the-shelf" items. ISO 13856-3:2013 also gives specific requirements for the following pressure-sensitive protective devices: pressure-sensitive bumpers; pressure-sensitive plates; pressure-sensitive wires (trip wires). It deals with the design of a pressure-sensitive device with regard to safety and reliability rather than its suitability for particular applications. It is not applicable to specifying the dimensions of pressure-sensitive protective devices in relation to any particular application, or stopping devices according to IEC 60204‑1 used for the normal operation, including emergency stopping of machinery. While requirements are given for the immunity of the device to electromagnetic disturbances, these are not intended to cover all aspects of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
Abstract
Overview
SIST EN ISO 13856-3:2014 (identical to ISO 13856-3:2013) is a Type‑B2 machinery safety standard that establishes general principles and requirements for the design and testing of pressure‑sensitive protective devices that are not covered by Parts 1 or 2 of ISO 13856. It specifically addresses pressure‑sensitive bumpers, plates and wires (trip wires) and similar devices, focusing on safety and reliability of the sensor itself rather than application‑specific dimensions or stop‑device design. The standard also provides guidance that supports conformity with EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Applies to devices produced for specific applications (often custom rather than off‑the‑shelf).
- Excludes specification of dimensions tied to particular machine layouts and excludes normal/emergency stop devices according to IEC 60204‑1.
- Design and testing requirements
- General principles for safe and reliable sensor design, including functional behaviour with and without external reset.
- Specific requirements for:
- Pressure‑sensitive bumpers
- Pressure‑sensitive plates
- Pressure‑sensitive wires (trip wires)
- Requirements cover mechanical, electrical and timing characteristics needed to interface with machine control systems.
- EMC considerations
- Provides requirements for immunity to electromagnetic disturbances, but does not cover full electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) scope.
- Marking and information
- Mandatory marking, labelling and control‑unit/sensor identification details.
- Information for selection, installation, commissioning, inspection and maintenance.
- Verification and testing
- Defined verification tests and timing diagrams (Annex A) plus guidance (Annexes B–E) for device characteristics, design, application and commissioning.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses this standard
- Machine designers and OEMs specifying bespoke pressure‑sensitive sensors.
- Safety engineers performing risk assessments and selecting protective devices.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies verifying compliance.
- Integrators, maintenance teams and end‑users implementing safeguards on machinery.
- Typical applications
- Safeguarding moving parts, access areas or perimeter zones where a pressure‑sensitive bumper, plate or wire is required to detect contact and trigger a safe machine state.
- Customized installations in material handling, robotics cells, transport systems, packaging and other industrial machinery where standard mats/edges are unsuitable.
Related standards
- ISO 13856‑1 (pressure‑sensitive mats/floors)
- ISO 13856‑2 (pressure‑sensitive edges/bars)
- ISO 12100 (risk assessment and general principles of machine safety)
- IEC 60204‑1 (electrical equipment - note: stopping devices are covered there)
- Relevant Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC clauses for conformity
