Overview
EN ISO 14310:2008 (ISO 14310:2008) specifies requirements and guidance for packers and bridge plugs used as downhole equipment in the petroleum and natural gas industries. The standard addresses functional and technical specifications - including design, design verification and validation, materials, documentation and data control, repair, shipment, and storage - for products used inside a conduit (casing, tubing or liner). Installation and maintenance are explicitly outside its scope. EN ISO 14310:2008 is the CEN-adopted European version of ISO 14310:2008 and supersedes earlier editions.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Functional specification: type description, well and operational parameters, environmental compatibility, and compatibility with related well equipment.
- Technical specification: technical characteristics, design requirements, and design verification procedures.
- Design validation: seven validation grades (V6 minimum to V0 highest) to demonstrate conformity via testing; supports scaled and alternative validation methods where identified.
- Quality grading: three quality grades (Q3 minimum, Q2 intermediate, Q1 highest) allowing purchasers to specify required levels of inspection and verification.
- Materials and component control: requirements for exposed and flow‑wetted components, drift diameter definition, extrusion gap considerations and material selection consistent with well environments.
- Supplier/manufacturer obligations: documentation, data control, product identification, assembly verification, repair and nonconformance handling.
- Logistics: specified procedures for shipment and storage to protect product integrity.
- Testing and inspection: links to sampling and acceptance (e.g., ISO 2859-1) and personnel qualification for non‑destructive testing (ISO 9712).
Applications
- Selection, procurement and manufacture of downhole packers and bridge plugs for well operations within a conduit.
- Contract and specification drafting between purchasers/users and suppliers/manufacturers to ensure consistent performance, safety and traceability.
- Basis for quality control, product testing, and design validation programs used by OEMs, testing labs and third‑party inspectors.
- Useful in specifying product requirements for well integrity, zonal isolation, pressure containment and temporary or permanent well operations (note: installation/maintenance not covered).
- Downhole equipment designers and manufacturers
- Procurement and quality managers in oil & gas companies
- Drilling, completions and production engineers specifying packers/bridge plugs
- Inspection, testing and certification bodies
- Regulatory and compliance teams assessing product conformity
