This part of ISO 14526 specifies the methods of preparation of test specimens and the test methods to be used in determining the properties of phenolic powder moulding compounds (PF-PMCs). Requirements for handling test material and for conditioning both the test material before moulding and the specimens before testing are given here. Procedures and conditions for the preparation of test specimens and procedures for measuring properties of the materials from which these specimens are made are given. Properties and test methods which are suitable and necessary to characterize PMCs are listed. The properties have been selected from the general test methods in ISO 10350-1. Other test methods in wide use for, or of particular significance to, PMCs are also included in this part of ISO 14526, as are the designatory properties found in ISO 14526-1. In order to obtain reproducible and comparable test results, it is necessary to use the methods of preparation and conditioning, the specimen dimensions and the test procedures specified herein. Values determined will not necessarily be identical to those obtained using specimens of different dimensions or prepared using different procedures.
Abstract
Overview
SIST EN ISO 14526-2:2000 is the internationally harmonized standard that specifies the preparation of test specimens and the determination of properties for phenolic powder moulding compounds (PF-PMCs). This standard is an essential part of quality assurance and material characterization in the plastics industry, particularly for thermosetting materials based on phenolic resins. The document provides detailed, standardized procedures for handling materials, conditioning both the test compounds before moulding and the resulting specimens before testing, and outlines the relevant test methods necessary to obtain reproducible and comparable results.
Achieving consistency in test specimen preparation and property measurement is crucial for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and product developers working with phenolic PMCs. Adhering to the methods specified in ISO 14526-2 ensures global compatibility and reliable material data, enabling fair comparison, regulatory compliance, and informed material selection.
Key Topics
- Test Specimen Preparation: Outlines standardized procedures for preparing PF-PMC test specimens via compression moulding or injection moulding, following rigid controls on processing conditions.
- Material Handling & Conditioning: Specifies handling and conditioning of both the unmoulded test material and the finished specimens, addressing moisture control, storage, and standard atmospheric conditioning.
- Determination of Properties: Lists and references suitable test methods for determining key mechanical, thermal, electrical, and physical properties of phenolic PMCs, often referring to ISO 10350-1 and other core standards.
- Reproducibility and Comparability: Emphasizes the necessity of using consistent methods and dimensions to ensure that test data are valid for quality control and specification purposes.
- Reference to General and Specialized Tests: Incorporates not only general plastics test methods but also those specifically important for phenolic PMCs, such as shrinkage, water absorption, impact strength, and electrical property testing.
Applications
SIST EN ISO 14526-2:2000 is applied throughout the plastics manufacturing and testing chain, including:
- Research and Development: For evaluating new phenolic powder moulding compound formulations or modifying properties to suit specific end uses.
- Quality Control in Manufacturing: Ensuring each production batch meets the mechanical strength, thermal stability, electrical insulation, and chemical resistance required for electrical housings, automotive parts, and industrial components.
- Third-party Testing Laboratories: Providing independent verification of compound properties, often required by clients or regulatory agencies.
- Material Selection and Specification: Enabling engineers and designers to compare material performance based on standardized data, supporting appropriate material selection for applications demanding thermal stability and electrical insulation.
- Certification and Regulatory Compliance: Supporting the fulfillment of industry or government regulations requiring documentation of test methods and material properties according to recognized standards.
