ISO 14554-2:2013 specifies requirements for the demonstration of the capability of a manufacturer or a sub-contractor to produce welded constructions, fulfilling specified quality requirements, in one or more of the following: a) a contract between involved parties; b) an application standard; c) a regulatory requirement. The requirements contained within ISO 14554-2:2013 can be adopted in full or can be selectively deleted by the manufacturer if not applicable to the construction concerned. They provide a flexible framework for the control of welding by providing specific requirments for: 1) Case 1 ? resistance welding in contracts which require the manufacturer or sub-contractor to have a quality system other than ISO 9001[1] and where the documented welding control has a minor importance to the overall integrity of the final construction; 2) Case 2 ? resistance welding as guidance to a manufacturer or sub-contractor developing a quality system; 3) Case 3 ? references in application standards which use resistance welding as part of their requirements or in a contract between relevant parties. ISO 14554-2:2013: i) is independent of the type of welded construction to be manufactured; ii) defines quality requirements for welding both in production plants and on site; iii) provides guidance for describing the capability of a manufacturer to produce welded constructions to meet specified requirements; iv) can also be used as a basis for assessing the manufacturer in respect to his welding capability. For general guidelines for selection and use, see ISO 3834‑1, while being aware that only comprehensive and elementary requirements are specified for resistance welding. An annex gives a summary comparison of specific quality requirements for resistance welding in ISO 14554-2:2013 and ISO 14554‑1.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 14554-2:2013 - Quality requirements for welding: Resistance welding of metallic materials - Part 2: Elementary quality requirements provides a flexible, industry‑level framework for demonstrating a manufacturer’s or sub‑contractor’s capability to produce resistance‑welded constructions that meet specified contractual, regulatory or application‑standard requirements. The document is independent of construction type, applies both in production plants and on site, and can be adopted in full or tailored by excluding non‑applicable items.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and application cases
- Case 1: For contracts where welding control is of minor impact and a quality system other than ISO 9001 is used.
- Case 2: Guidance for manufacturers developing a welding quality system.
- Case 3: Use as a reference in application standards or contracts.
- Contract and design review
- Ensure all welding‑related contractual and design information is available before fabrication and confirm capability to meet requirements.
- Sub‑contracting
- Sub‑contractors must follow manufacturer instructions and comply with the standard’s requirements.
- Welding personnel
- Sufficient, competent staff for planning, performance and supervision.
- Operators require introduction and task‑oriented training.
- Resistance weld setters/programmers must demonstrate competence via experience, in‑house training or certification.
- Equipment and consumables
- Welding equipment must be maintained in proper working order; appropriate electrodes and auxiliaries must be used.
- Welding activities and procedures
- Welding shall be carried out in accordance with appropriate welding procedures.
- Inspection, testing and records
- Perform inspections/tests specified by contract; maintain competent inspection personnel.
- Quality records specified in contracts retained for a minimum of five years unless otherwise agreed.
- Storage, non‑conformance and corrective action
- Proper storage and marking of parent material; control and documented procedures for repairs, re‑inspection and corrective measures.
Practical applications and users
EN ISO 14554-2:2013 is used by:
- Manufacturers and sub‑contractors performing resistance welding (spot, projection, seam) who need to demonstrate welding capability.
- Welding engineers, quality managers and production supervisors implementing welding control measures.
- Procurement and contract teams specifying welding quality requirements in contracts and application standards.
- Auditors and assessors evaluating a supplier’s resistance‑welding capability and compliance.
This standard is particularly useful where a concise, elementary set of quality requirements is preferred over comprehensive schemes.
