Overview
EN ISO 14555:2025 - Welding - Arc stud welding of metallic materials (ISO 14555:2025) - is the latest (2025) CEN-adopted standard that defines requirements for arc stud welding where welded studs are subject to static and fatigue loading. The document specifies stud-welding-specific requirements for welding knowledge, quality requirements, welding procedure specification (WPS), welding procedure qualification (WPQR), operator qualification, and production weld testing. It is intended to demonstrate a manufacturer’s capability to produce welded constructions of specified quality and can be used as a contractual reference (with optional partial adoption as described in Annex A).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability: Applies to arc stud welding of metallic materials for static and fatigue-loaded joints; includes on-site through-deck stud welding considerations (see Annex B for working range).
- Welding personnel: Defines qualification and responsibilities for stud-welding operators and welding coordination roles.
- Equipment & maintenance: Covers production equipment description, gun/lift mechanisms, stud feeding, shielding systems and maintenance requirements relevant to consistent stud welding quality.
- Welding Procedure Specification (WPS): Information requirements for manufacturer identity, parent material, studs, auxiliaries (ferrules, shielding gas), power source, welding variables, thermal conditions, and post-weld treatments.
- Welding procedure qualification (WPQR): Procedures for qualifying stud-welding processes by test, proof of material conformity, test-piece dimensions, scope of testing, acceptance criteria, re-testing and range of qualification.
- Examination & testing: Specifies production and qualification tests including visual inspection, bend testing, tensile testing and other NDT or destructive tests appropriate to static/fatigue requirements.
- Quality integration: References general fusion welding quality requirements from ISO 3834 series; suitable for contract clauses and manufacturer capability demonstration.
Practical applications
EN ISO 14555:2025 is applicable where reliable stud welds are critical for structural performance and fatigue life. Typical applications include:
- Shipbuilding and offshore deck stud welding
- Bridge and building construction (structural studs, shear connectors)
- Rail, aerospace and automotive components where stud attachments are load-bearing
- Heavy fabrication, cranes and machinery where fatigue resistance is essential
Who should use this standard
- Welding engineers and welding coordinators specifying stud-welding WPS/WPQR
- Fabrication manufacturers demonstrating production capability and QA/QC
- Welding inspectors, third‑party certifiers and contract specifiers
- Procurement and contract writers including stud-welding clauses
