This document specifies a methodology to assess the suitability of equipment (e.g. machinery, measuring equipment, process equipment, components and tools) for use in cleanrooms and associated controlled environments, with respect to airborne particle cleanliness as specified in ISO 14644-1. Particle sizes range from 0,1 µm to equal to or larger than 5 µm (given in ISO 14644-1). NOTE Where regulatory agencies impose supplementary guidelines or restrictions, appropriate adaptation of the assessment methodology can be required. This document is not applicable to the following items: assessment of suitability with respect to biocontamination; testing for suitability of decontamination agents and techniques; cleanability of equipment and materials; requirements on design of equipment and selection of materials; physical properties of materials (e.g. electrostatic, thermal properties); optimizing performance of equipment for specific process applications; selection and use of statistical methods for testing; protocols and requirements for local safety regulations.
Abstract
Overview
SIST EN ISO 14644-14:2026 is a European and International Standard developed by CEN and ISO for the assessment of equipment suitability in cleanrooms and controlled environments based on airborne particle concentration. This standard is crucial for sectors requiring stringent contamination control-such as pharmaceuticals, microelectronics, healthcare, optics, and aerospace-ensuring that all equipment within cleanrooms complies with the air cleanliness standards set by ISO 14644-1.
The document provides a comprehensive methodology to evaluate various types of equipment-including machinery, measurement instruments, process apparatus, components, and tools-for their potential to emit airborne particles in controlled environments. Compliance with these requirements is essential for maintaining high standards of product quality and process safety.
Key Topics
- Methodology for Suitability Assessment: SIST EN ISO 14644-14:2026 prescribes standardized procedures to assess airborne particle emissions from equipment, covering particle sizes ranging from 0.1 µm to 5 µm and above.
- Link to ISO 14644-1 Classification: The assessment methodology references air cleanliness classes as specified in ISO 14644-1, ensuring globally recognized benchmarks.
- Testing Procedures: The standard outlines steps such as visual inspection, identification of high particle concentration (HPC) zones, detailed measurement procedures, and data processing.
- Documentation Requirements: It mandates comprehensive documentation of the assessment process to maintain traceability and reproducibility, including descriptions of equipment, test conditions, and results.
- Scope Limitations: The standard excludes assessment of biocontamination, decontamination agents, equipment cleanability, material selection, physical properties, performance optimization, statistical testing methods, and safety protocols.
Applications
SIST EN ISO 14644-14:2026 is directly applicable to industries where contamination control is critical:
- Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Processing: Ensures equipment does not compromise product safety and quality via airborne particles.
- Semiconductor and Microelectronics Manufacturing: Maintains required cleanroom conditions to prevent device defects and yield loss.
- Medical Device Production: Minimizes particle-induced contamination risks affecting safety or sterility.
- Aerospace and Optics Industries: Guarantees equipment use does not exceed allowable contamination levels in precision manufacturing and assembly.
- Life Sciences Laboratories and Food Processing: Supports certification and regulatory compliance for cleanroom equipment.
Organizations can use the standard to verify equipment suitability before installation, during routine qualification, or as part of supplier evaluation, supporting regulatory inspections and product certification processes.

- ISO 14644-3: Test methods for cleanrooms, providing guidance on appropriate testing instrumentation and practices.
- Additional ISO 14644 series documents detail requirements for other attributes such as surface cleanliness (ISO 14644-9), biocontamination control (ISO 14644-12), and equipment design (ISO 14644-7).
Summary
SIST EN ISO 14644-14:2026 offers a clear, harmonized methodology for the assessment of equipment suitability in cleanrooms, focusing on control of airborne particle emissions. Using this standard, industries can confidently select and qualify equipment that complies with critical air cleanliness requirements, minimizing risk and upholding best practices for contamination control. Adhering to SIST EN ISO 14644-14:2026 supports quality assurance, enhances operational integrity, and facilitates regulatory compliance in contamination-sensitive environments.
