This document gives guidelines and recommendations for the general principles of design appropriate to articles to be hot dip galvanized after fabrication (e.g. in accordance with ISO 1461) for the corrosion protection of, for example, articles that have been manufactured in accordance with EN 1090-2. This document does not apply to hot dip galvanized coatings applied to continuous wire or sheet (e.g. to EN 10346).
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 14713-2:2020 - "Zinc coatings - Guidelines and recommendations for the protection against corrosion of iron and steel in structures - Part 2: Hot dip galvanizing" - provides practical guidance on design, fabrication and handling of articles intended to be hot dip galvanized after fabrication. Prepared by ISO/TC 107 and adopted by CEN, this document supplements product-specific standards (for example EN 1090-2) and focuses on ensuring effective corrosion protection of steel structures through appropriate design and process considerations.
Key topics and technical focus
The standard covers general principles and recommendations rather than prescriptive test limits. Key technical topics include:
- Design for hot dip galvanizing: principles to make fabricated articles suitable for immersion in zinc melt (e.g., preferred geometry and access for fluxing/drainage).
- Surface preparation: considerations before galvanizing to ensure coating quality.
- Design features and tolerances: recommendations on features (holes, cavities, mating parts) and dimensional tolerances that affect galvanizing performance and assembly.
- Storage and transport: guidance to avoid damage or contamination prior to galvanizing.
- Material and component effects: influence of material composition, castings, surface roughness, thermal cutting and welding on coating adherence and appearance.
- Internal stress and cracking risks: discussion of distortion, hydrogen embrittlement, strain-age embrittlement and liquid metal embrittlement in susceptible steels.
- Large objects and process effects: handling issues for big or thick steel items and thermal effects of the galvanizing process (including impacts on threaded parts and mating dimensions).
- After-treatments and duplex systems: post‑galvanizing coatings (paint/powder) and combined protection strategies.
- Annex A: informative preferred designs and illustrative tables to assist designers.
Practical applications
EN ISO 14713-2:2020 is used to:
- Improve durability of structural steel through correct pre-galvanizing design.
- Reduce rework and defects during hot dip galvanizing by addressing access, drainage and venting in designs.
- Inform specification writers and procurement documents when hot dip galvanizing (ISO 1461) is required after fabrication.
- Guide manufacturers of steel structures (e.g., per EN 1090-2) on galvanizing-friendly fabrication and assembly practices.
Who should use this standard
- Structural and design engineers
- Fabricators and welders of steel components
- Hot dip galvanizing processors and quality inspectors
- Specifiers, corrosion engineers, architects and maintenance planners
