Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 15083:2020/A1:2022 is Amendment 1 to the international standard ISO 15083:2020, prepared by ISO/TC 188 in cooperation with CEN/TC 464. It updates requirements and normative references for bilge‑pumping systems on small craft (recreational boats). The amendment clarifies terminology, updates referenced standards (including ISO 8666, ISO 8849, ISO 13297 and ISO 9093), and refines installation and electrical requirements. Note: a record with the scope indicates “consultant’s assessment is missing - publication on hold,” so national implementation status may vary.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and exclusions
- Applies to systems intended to remove the normal accumulation of bilge water.
- Explicitly excludes pumps/systems intended for damage control, cockpits and wells, and ventilation fittings.
- Updated normative references
- Replaces older references with more recent editions: e.g., ISO 8666:2020, ISO 8849:2020 (electric bilge pumps), ISO 13297:2020 (+ Amd.1:2022) for electrical installations, and ISO 9093:2020 for seacocks and through‑hull fittings.
- Definitions and symbols
- Updates the definition of fully enclosed boat and adds the term main steering position (manufacturer‑defined).
- Table of symbols aligned with ISO 8666:2020 (length, beam, freeboard, mass, reference sail area).
- Installation and operation
- For design categories A, B and C a bilge pumping system shall be:
- Permanently attached to boat structure.
- Activated at a location in the vicinity of, and readily accessible from, the main steering position.
- Fore and aft peak tanks need not be linked to the bilge system when their combined volume is within the specified percentage of vessel displacement (as stated in the standard).
- For design categories A, B and C a bilge pumping system shall be:
- Electrical and hull outlet requirements
- Electric pumps must comply with ISO 8849:2020.
- Electrical installations must meet ISO 13297:2020 and its Amendment 1:2022.
- Hull discharge outlets shall be above the heeled waterline unless fitted with a seacock in accordance with ISO 9093:2020 and a means to prevent backflow.
Applications and users
This amendment is relevant to:
- Boat manufacturers and naval architects (system design and compliance).
- Marine systems installers and equipment suppliers (pump selection, seacocks, electrical integration).
- Surveyors, inspectors, and regulatory compliance officers assessing conformity with the Recreational Craft Directive (Directive 2013/53/EU).
- Service yards and refit teams updating bilge systems to current standards.
