ISO 15367-1:2003 specifies methods for the measurement of the topography of the wavefront of a laser beam by measurement and interpretation of the spatial distribution of the phase of that wavefront across a plane approximately perpendicular to its direction of propagation. Requirements are given for the measurement and analysis of phase distribution data to provide quantitative wavefront parameters and their uncertainty in a test report. The methods described in ISO 15367-1:2003 are applicable to the testing and characterization of a wide range of beam types from both continuous wave and pulsed lasers. Definitions of parameters describing wavefront deformations are given together with methods for the determination of those parameters from phase distribution measurements.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 15367-1:2003 - "Lasers and laser-related equipment - Test methods for determination of the shape of a laser beam wavefront - Part 1: Terminology and fundamental aspects" (CEN/ISO) defines the terminology, measurement fundamentals and reporting requirements for characterizing the wavefront shape of laser beams. The standard specifies how to measure and interpret the spatial phase distribution across a plane approximately perpendicular to beam propagation and requires that quantitative wavefront parameters and their uncertainty be documented in a test report. Methods apply to a wide range of beam types from both continuous-wave and pulsed lasers.
Key topics and requirements
- Terminology and symbols for phase, wavefront surface, and related parameters to ensure consistent reporting.
- Phase distribution measurement: guidance on capturing the spatial distribution of the phase (topography) of a beam’s wavefront.
- Wavefront parameters defined and specified for extraction, including:
- azimuth of principal planes of the phase distribution
- magnitude of astigmatic aberrations and detailed astigmatism definitions
- evaluation of the wavefront aberration function and RMS wavefront deformation
- Measurement process elements detailed in the standard: test environment, beam modification, detector systems, wavefront measuring instruments, alignment and calibration procedures, and automated data inspection.
- Analysis methods: polynomial representation of wavefronts and computation of wavefront quality metrics.
- Uncertainty: requirements for uncertainty estimation and identification of main uncertainty sources that must be addressed in the test report.
- Reporting: quantitative results plus uncertainty must be provided in a test report suitable for quality assurance and traceable assessment.
Practical applications and users
EN ISO 15367-1:2003 is used for laser beam characterization, quality control and system development. Typical applications include:
- Specifying and verifying beam quality for optical system design and component selection.
- Measuring and correcting astigmatism and other wavefront deformations during alignment and integration.
- Combining phase distribution data with power (energy) density measurements (ISO 13694) for process engineering, safety hazard analysis and damage assessment at the interaction point.
- Producing traceable test reports for R&D labs, manufacturers, metrology institutes, medical and industrial laser system integrators, and safety assessors.
