Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 15750-3:2022 (Packaging - Steel drums - Part 3: Inserted flange‑type closure systems) is a CEN‑endorsed international standard that specifies the characteristics, dimensions and finish of inserted flange‑type closure systems used for steel drums. It replaces the 2008 edition and aligns with ISO 15750-3:2022. The standard defines closure components (flanges, plugs, washers, capseals, overseals, label/protection rings) and the requirements to ensure proper fit, sealing and operability.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Covers inserted flange‑type closure systems that are mechanically fixed steel inserts with threads, closable with metal or synthetic plugs to ensure a leaktight drum closure.
- Threading and gauges: Specifies thread conformity for common closures G 2 and G 3/4 to ISO 228-1 and GO gauge verification to ISO 228-2.
- Closure types: Normative annexes define dimensional and material requirements for closure types:
- Annex A - Octagonal base (type A)
- Annex B - Serrated base (type B)
- Annex C - Octagonal (G 2) / hexagonal (G 3/4) base (type C)
- Materials & finish: Flanges typically made from mild steel per ISO 3573/3574; finishes for flanges, plugs, label and protection rings are to be agreed between purchaser and supplier to ensure compatibility with contents or corrosion protection.
- Plugs and wrenching: Plugs must be removable with simple tools; wrenching inserts (welded or formed) must permit use of a universal tool (see Annex D). Annex E provides recommended closing torques.
- Capseals/overseals: When fitted, they must be manual or pneumatic crimping types with provisions for customs sealing and tamper evidence, and removable with simple tools.
- Label/protection rings: Designed for simultaneous mechanical insertion with the flange and can add reinforcement and neck corrosion protection.
Example dimensional data for Annex A (illustrative): nominal pitch diameters and flange/washers for G 3/4 and G 2 closures are provided in Table A.1 of the standard.
Practical applications and users
EN ISO 15750-3:2022 is used by:
- Drum manufacturers and closure system suppliers for design and production specifications
- Packaging engineers and procurement teams to define acceptance criteria and material compatibility
- Quality control and testing labs verifying thread fit, sealing and torques
- Logistics, chemical, oil & gas and hazardous goods shippers requiring leak‑tight, tamper‑evident closures
- Regulatory and customs authorities for inspection standards (capseal provisions)
Related standards
- ISO 228-1 / ISO 228-2 (pipe thread dimensions and GO gauge verification)
- ISO 3573 / ISO 3574 (steel sheet materials)
- Other parts of the ISO 15750 series covering different drum closure systems
