Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 15874-2:2013/A2:2022 is a CEN-endorsed amendment to ISO 15874-2:2013 that adds impact testing requirements for polypropylene (PP) pipes used in plastics piping systems for hot and cold water installations. Approved by CEN in June 2022, this amendment integrates new test methods and parameters (Charpy and round‑the‑clock) to assess low‑temperature impact resistance of PP pressure pipes.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Adds impact resistance requirements to Part 2 (Pipes) of the ISO 15874 PP piping series.
- New normative reference: ISO 3127 (Thermoplastics pipes - Determination of resistance to external blows - Round‑the‑clock method).
- New clause titles: Introduces “7.1 Resistance to internal pressure” and a new 7.2 Impact resistance subclause.
- Impact test methods required:
- Charpy method (ISO 9854‑1) and conditioning (ISO 9854‑2) at 0 °C, with test piece type 1 (whole pipe) for small diameters (DN ≤ 25 mm).
- Round‑the‑clock method (ISO 3127) for DN ≥ 32 mm, using specified striker types (d25 or d90) and masses/heights according to a provided table (Table 12).
- Performance requirement: Pipes shall meet the impact resistance limits shown in the amendment (e.g., impact resistance ≤ 10 %; TIR ≤ 10 % when measured by the round‑the‑clock method) under the specified test parameters.
- Test energy basis: Drop heights and masses in Table 12 are calculated to provide a specific impact energy of approximately E/A = 4 kJ/m, consistent with material characteristics in the ISO 15874 series.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Manufacturers of PP pipes and prefabricated piping systems for potable hot and cold water who must demonstrate product robustness at low temperatures.
- Independent and in‑house testing laboratories performing Charpy and round‑the‑clock impact tests.
- Product certification bodies, conformity assessors and regulators ensuring compliance with European and ISO requirements.
- Engineers, specifiers, architects and procurement teams selecting piping systems for residential, commercial and industrial water supply installations where impact resistance and low‑temperature performance are relevant.
- Quality assurance and R&D teams developing new PP pipe compounds or pipe wall designs.
