ISO 15877-1:2009 specifies the general requirements of chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-C) piping systems intended to be used for hot and cold water installations within buildings for the conveyance of water, whether or not intended for human consumption (domestic systems) and for heating systems, under design pressures and temperatures appropriate to the class of application. It covers a range of service conditions (classes of application), design pressures and pipe dimension classes. It does not apply if the values of the design temperature, maximum design temperature and malfunction temperature are in excess of those given. ISO 15877-1:2009 also specifies the test parameters for the test methods to which it refers. In conjunction with the other parts of ISO 15877, it is applicable to PVC-C pipes and fittings, their joints and joints with components of other plastics and non-plastics materials intended to be used for hot and cold water installations.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 15877-1:2009 - published by CEN and aligned with ISO 15877-1:2009 - defines the general requirements for chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC‑C) piping systems used in hot and cold water installations and heating systems inside buildings. It covers PVC‑C pipes, fittings and joints, the applicable classes of application, and the test parameters for referenced methods. The standard applies where design pressures and temperatures fall within the values given in the standard; it does not apply if design, maximum or malfunction temperatures exceed those limits.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and application: PVC‑C systems for conveyance of water (potable or non‑potable) and for heating systems under specified design pressures and temperatures.
- Classification of service conditions: Defines classes of application and corresponding design conditions (pressure/temperature) for selection.
- Material properties:
- Density and chlorine content verification (per referenced methods).
- Hydrostatic stress properties and long‑term strength (reference to ISO 9080 for extrapolation).
- Malfunction temperature verification (test method for PVC‑C Type‑I material is included as an annex).
- Requirements regarding reprocessable/ recyclable material and effects on water quality.
- Geometrical definitions: Nominal sizes, outside/inside diameters and tolerances to ensure interchangeability.
- Test parameters: Specifies test parameters for methods referenced in the standard (e.g., for pressure testing, material characterization).
- Conformity aspects: Works with other parts (pipes, fittings, fitness for purpose, conformity guidance) to support system-level assessment.
Practical applications and users
- Typical applications:
- Domestic potable water supply systems
- Building heating systems
- Internal plumbing conveying hot and cold water
- Who uses this standard:
- Manufacturers of PVC‑C pipes, fittings and jointing systems (product design, material selection, testing)
- Specifiers and engineers (plumbing, building services) selecting systems by class of application
- Installers and contractors ensuring compatibility and correct jointing methods
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors performing material and system tests
- Regulators and building code authorities referencing harmonized requirements
