Overview
EN ISO 16136:2006 - Industrial valves - Butterfly valves of thermoplastics materials - specifies requirements for the design, manufacture, functional characteristics and testing of butterfly valves made from thermoplastic materials. The standard applies to hand- or power-operated valves for industrial pipe systems (all fluids), covering nominal sizes DN 15–DN 600, pressure ratings PN 6, PN 10, PN 16 and Class 150, a rated service temperature range of −40 °C to +120 °C, and an intended lifetime of 25 years. It also defines marking, documentation, storage and conformity requirements.
Key topics and requirements
- Design and materials: rules for valve body, trim and connection to piping systems; material suitability for pressure/temperature service.
- Pressure/temperature rating: tables and rating factors for PMA (allowable maximum operating pressure) across −40 °C to +120 °C.
- Dimensions and interfaces: face-to-face / centre-to-face and flange interfaces consistent with established piping dimensions.
- Operation and functional characteristics: requirements for manual and power operation, torque and actuation interfaces.
- Manufacture and traceability: production controls, marking, traceability and documentation requirements including declaration of compliance.
- Testing: specified test procedures including initial type tests and pressure/leakage tests (reference to valve test methods). Test documentation and acceptance criteria are required.
- Marking & storage: mandatory marking elements and preparation for storage/transportation.
- Regulatory linkage: informs conformity with EU Directive 97/23/EC (PED) where applicable (see Annex ZA).
Applications and users
- Valve manufacturers: for design, production and type-testing of thermoplastic butterfly valves.
- Specifiers and purchasers: to write technical specifications and procurement requirements for industrial and municipal piping systems.
- Engineers & designers: selecting valves by DN/PN/Class, temperature rating and expected lifetime for chemical, water, wastewater and process plants.
- Testing laboratories & conformity assessors: to perform the standardized tests and prepare compliance documentation.
- Plant operators / asset managers: for maintenance planning, replacement and verifying suitability of thermoplastic butterfly valves in service.
