ISO 16137:2006 specifies requirements for the design, functional characteristics and manufacture of check valves made of thermoplastics materials intended to allow the flow of liquid fluids through the valve in one direction only and to prevent backflow, their connection to the pipe system, the body materials and their pressure/temperature rating between -40 degrees Celsius and + 120 degrees Celsius, for a lifetime of 25 years, and also specifies their tests. ISO 16137:2006 is applicable to valves to be installed in industrial pipe systems, irrespective of the field of application and the fluids to be conveyed. It is concerned with the range of DN 8, DN 10, DN 15, DN 20, DN 25, DN 40, DN 50, DN 65, DN 80, DN 100, DN 125, DN 150, DN 200, DN 250, DN 300, DN 350, DN 400, DN 500 and DN 600, and the range of PN 6, PN 10, PN 16, PN 25, and Class 150 and Class 300.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 16137:2006 - Industrial valves: Check valves of thermoplastics materials (ISO 16137:2006) specifies requirements for the design, functional characteristics, manufacture and testing of thermoplastic check valves used to allow liquid flow in one direction and prevent backflow. Published by CEN in alignment with ISO, the standard covers valves intended for industrial pipe systems (including general water supply, drainage and sewerage) with a design life of 25 years and a pressure/temperature rating range from −40 °C to +120 °C.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Valves for industrial piping systems, irrespective of field or fluid (note: drinking-water systems may need additional rules).
- Nominal sizes covered: DN 8 to DN 600 (full list in the standard).
- Pressure classes covered: PN 6, PN 10, PN 16, PN 25 and Class 150, Class 300.
- Design and operation
- Functional design to prevent backflow; consideration of installation orientation and operational limits.
- Materials
- Thermoplastic body and trim materials with selection guidance referencing polymer specifications and chemical-resistance classifications.
- Pressure/temperature ratings
- Ratings and rating factors to relate PMA/PS to PN/Class across temperature range (−40 °C to +120 °C).
- Manufacture, marking and traceability
- Requirements for production quality, identification, marking, documentation and traceability of pressure parts.
- Testing and type approval
- Initial type tests and test methods (fatigue, pressure tests, flow resistance) are specified; relevant normative references include ISO 8659, ISO 9393-2 and EN 12266-1.
- Documentation
- Test reports, declaration of compliance and information for procurement and safe storage/transportation.
Applications and who uses it
- Manufacturers of thermoplastic check valves for industrial process, chemical handling, water treatment and sewage systems.
- Design engineers and specifiers who select valves based on DN/PN/Class, temperature/pressure ratings and material compatibility.
- Quality/Compliance teams ensuring products meet CEN/ISO requirements and the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) conformity where applicable (see Annex ZA).
- Testing laboratories and inspection bodies that perform type tests and pressure/fatigue testing.
- Procurement and maintenance personnel seeking guidance on marking, documentation and expected service life.
Related standards
- EN 12266-1 (valve testing - pressure tests)
- ISO 8659 (fatigue strength test methods)
- ISO 9393-2 (pressure test methods for thermoplastic valves)
- EN 558 (face-to-face dimensions), EN 1092 (flanges)
EN ISO 16137:2006 is essential for ensuring reliable, durable thermoplastic check valves in industrial piping systems and for demonstrating conformity to European and international practice.
