Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 16610-61:2015/A1:2020 (ISO 16610-61:2015/Amd 1:2019) is an amendment to the GPS (Geometrical Product Specification) series addressing filtration of areal surface data with linear Gaussian filters. This amendment specifically develops and formalizes a method for the treatment of end effects that arise when filtering finite areal measurements (linear planar and linear cylindrical Gaussian filters). It is published by CEN as a European adoption of the ISO amendment.
Key topics and technical requirements
- End-effect treatment: Introduces Clause 7 defining how to handle end/edge regions where filter kernels extend beyond measured areas. When end effects are significant, the moment retainment criterion with p = 1 (see ISO 16610-28) shall be applied.
- Generalized filter operations: Adds explicit generalized filter formulations for:
- Linear planar Gaussian filters (Formula (19)) - non-separable operation using shift‑variant correction functions.
- Linear cylindrical Gaussian filters (Formula (20)) - separable operation with corresponding correction functions.
- Shift‑variant correction functions: These correction functions are computed by solving specified matrix equations so the filter retains desired statistical/moment properties near edges.
- Integration and truncation: Defines integration intervals, nesting (cut‑off) indices, and truncation indices to determine the effective filtered area and regions affected by end effects.
- Behavior in interior regions: Confirms that in interior regions (away from edges) the filter behavior matches the previously specified formulas in the base part of the standard.
- Bibliographic update: Adds a relevant reference on areal filtering methods (Seewig & Leach, Areal Filtering Methods).
Applications and users
- Practical uses:
- Areal surface texture analysis in precision manufacturing, tribology, and optics.
- Quality control and acceptance testing where filtered surface metrics are sensitive to edge effects.
- Instrument and software development for surface metrology (profilers, interferometers, and software implementing areal filters).
- Primary users:
- Metrologists, QC engineers, and surface texture analysts.
- Test laboratories and accreditation bodies.
- Manufacturers of measurement instruments and surface analysis software.
- Researchers in surface characterization and standards committees.
