EN ISO 17162:2025 - Overview

EN ISO 17162:2025 (adopted from ISO 17162:2014) specifies a standardized method for determining the nominal compressive strength of advanced monolithic technical ceramics (fine ceramics) at room temperature. Approved by CEN in November 2025 and to be implemented nationally by CEN members, this standard provides an industrially practical, reproducible test procedure for material development, quality control and component design data.

One platen should incorporate a calotte for self-alignment.
Platens and loading blocks must have hardness and Young’s modulus ≥ 400 GPa (examples: silicon carbide or cemented carbide).
Loading blocks: contact surface cross-section at least five times greater than the test-piece end faces; blocks should resist fracture and be used only once to avoid damage transfer.
Compression platens must be checked and refinished/replaced if damaged.

Test pieces and procedure: The standard places defined restrictions on shape, size, surface finish (see EN 623-4), number of specimens, measurement equipment (ISO 3611 reference) and the sequence of assembly and loading to minimize test-method errors.

References and conformity: Normative references include ISO 7500-1, ISO/IEC 17025 and EN 623-4.
