Overview
EN ISO 17262:2012/A1:2019 is Amendment 1 to ISO 17262:2012, published by CEN in March 2019. It updates the international standard "Intelligent transport systems - Automatic vehicle and equipment identification - Numbering and data structures" primarily for intermodal goods transport. The amendment revises ASN.1 data definitions, clarifies message and identifier structures used by Automatic Vehicle and Equipment Identification (AEI) systems, and replaces Annex A with a normative ASN.1 module for intermodal numbering and data structures.
Key topics and technical changes
This amendment focuses on precise data structure and encoding definitions to support interoperability of AEI and ITS components:
- ASN.1 module published: Annex A replaced with the normative AVIAEIIntermodalNumberingAndDataStructures ASN.1 module (available from ISO’s 17262 resource).
- Message and type revisions:
- AEIMessageType updated to include local time (TimeReal), ReaderLocation, TerminalMonitoringType and TransportObjectMessageType.
- DisplayMessageType and TransportObjectMessageType redefined to include access control status, transport object identifiers and optional message info.
- Updated enumerations and types (examples from the amendment):
- AccessControlStatus: accessOk (0), accessDenied (1), accessPending (2).
- TransportObjectType: goodsItem (0), package (1), transportMeans (2).
- TerminalMonitoringType: defined as a BIT STRING with entries such as entry, exit, loading, unloading, stacking, registration, etc.
- Identifier structures: MultipleLoadIdentification expanded to reference identifier codes aligned with related ISO standards (e.g., ISO 14816, ISO 17363–17367, ISO 18185) and to allow multiple identifier types (intermodal, containers, RTI, transport units).
- Other fixes and clarifications: changes to CS9 (SwapBodyStructure) layout, removal of specific paragraphs, and a note indicating CS11 will be reintroduced in a future revision.
Practical applications and users
This amendment supports consistent numbering, data structures and encoding used across AEI and ITS implementations. Typical practical uses:
- ITS system integrators and software engineers implementing AEI messaging and data encodings (ASN.1).
- RFID and AEI reader manufacturers and firmware developers needing standardized ReaderLocation, message and identifier formats.
- Port, terminal and intermodal transport operators for automatic identification of transport means, containers and goods items.
- Supply chain and logistics solution providers ensuring interoperability with ISO-based identifiers (container IDs, transport unit IDs, electronic seals).
- Standards bodies and certification labs validating conformance to EN ISO 17262 / ISO 17262.
