ISO 17652-1:2003 specifies standardized conditions for an assessment of shop primers on the weldability of steel materials. It is intended to be used for assessment of shop primers by testing by: the suppliers during development of new shop primers; testing by the suppliers during production as part of a quality control scheme; declaration of the properties of shop primers by suppliers; use as a reference in contracts between suppliers and customers for deliveries of shop primers; acceptance testing of shop primers by customers. This part of ISO 17652 can also be used for comparisons between different shop primers using the welding procedure appropriate for the task, or between the different welding procedures using a specific shop primer.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 17652-1:2003 - "Welding - Test for shop primers in relation to welding and allied processes - Part 1: General requirements" defines the standardized framework for assessing how shop primers (prefabrication primers) affect the weldability and related processing of steel. Published by CEN/ISO, this Part 1 provides general requirements, terminology and guidance used when testing primers for development, quality control, supplier declarations, contractual references and customer acceptance testing.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and purpose: Standardised conditions for assessing shop primers on weldability of steel (see clause 1). Intended uses include supplier R&D, production QC, declarations, contractual reference and customer acceptance.
- Terms and definitions: Clear definitions for key concepts such as shop primer, rating test, weldability test, emission test, test of cutting properties and supplier’s recommendation (clause 3).
- Guidance on application: Clause 4 explains how to reference appropriate parts of EN ISO 17652 depending on the test objective - e.g., rating comparisons, weldability testing in production, or thermal cutting assessment.
- Health, safety and environment: Explicit guidance to manage solvent emissions during application/curing and possible increased fumes/gases during welding/cutting. Emphasises worker protection and environmental controls (clause 5).
- Normative references: Part 1 directs users to specialized test procedures in related parts:
- EN ISO 17652-2:2003 - Welding properties (rating and weldability tests)
- EN ISO 17652-3 - Thermal cutting
- EN ISO 17652-4 - Emission of fumes and gases
Practical applications - who uses this standard
- Primer manufacturers / suppliers: Use for R&D, new product development and production quality control to ensure consistent weldability performance.
- Fabricators and welding engineers: Reference when selecting or approving shop-primed steels for structural fabrication and specifying welding procedures.
- Procurement & contract authors: Include as a contractual reference for primer delivery requirements and acceptance testing.
- Quality assurance teams and customers: Conduct acceptance testing or comparative evaluations between primers or welding procedures.
- Health & safety officers: Apply the standard's environmental and personnel protection guidance when testing or implementing shop-primed materials.
Note: Some comparative or production-oriented tests are not intended for contractual acceptance; consult Part 1 guidance and the specific test parts (2–4) for suitability.
