ISO 17879:2017 specifies the design, type testing, marking and manufacturing tests and examinations requirements for self-closing cylinder valves intended to be fitted to refillable transportable gas cylinders which convey compressed, liquefied or dissolved gases. NOTE 1 The main applications for such self-closing cylinder valves are in the calibration gas and beverage industries. ISO 17879:2017 covers the function of a self-closing cylinder valve as a closure. NOTE 2 Requirements for standard cylinder valves are given in ISO 10297. Requirements for quick-release cylinder valves are given in ISO 17871. ISO 17879:2017 is not applicable to self-closing cylinder valves for cryogenic equipment, for portable fire extinguishers, or for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). NOTE 3 Requirements for valves for cryogenic vessels are specified in ISO 21011 and at a regional level, for example, in EN 1626. Requirements for valves for portable fire extinguishers at a regional level are specified, for example, in EN 3 series. Requirements for self-closing LPG cylinder valves are specified in ISO 14245. NOTE 4 Additional requirements for pressure-relief devices might be specified in international/regional regulations/standards.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 17879:2017 - Gas cylinders: Self-closing cylinder valves - Specification and type testing specifies design, type testing, marking, and manufacturing tests for self-closing cylinder valves fitted to refillable transportable gas cylinders conveying compressed, liquefied or dissolved gases. The standard focuses on the valve’s function as a closure and is widely used in the calibration gas and beverage industries. It uses gauge pressure values (bar is the unit used in the document; 1 bar = 100 000 Pa).
Key topics and requirements
EN ISO 17879:2017 covers technical and safety aspects including:
- Valve design requirements
- Suitability of materials and corrosion resistance
- Valve connections and mechanical compatibility with cylinders
- Mechanical strength and durability
- Resistance to hydraulic burst pressure
- Resistance to mechanical damage and impact
- Operating performance
- Self-closing mechanism reliability and endurance testing
- Leak tightness (internal and external) requirements
- Safety-related tests
- Resistance to ignition and acetylene flashback
- Oxygen pressure surge tests (see annexes)
- Type testing and documentation
- Test sample selection, test schedules, required test gases and temperatures
- Test reports and traceability
- Manufacturing controls and marking
- Production inspection, acceptance criteria and mandatory valve markings
Normative annexes in the standard detail mechanical strength tests, acetylene tests, oxygen pressure surge tests and manufacturing test procedures.
Applications and practical value
This standard is practical for ensuring safe, reliable self-closing valves used on transportable gas cylinders. Typical applications include:
- Calibration gas cylinders for laboratories and instrument calibration
- Beverage industry cylinders (e.g., CO2 dispensing systems)
- Any refillable gas cylinder service where self-closing closure functionality is required
Using EN ISO 17879:2017 helps reduce leak and ignition risks, ensures mechanical robustness, and provides a common baseline for type approval and conformity assessment.
Who uses this standard
- Valve manufacturers and designers
- Gas cylinder manufacturers and assemblers
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing type testing
- Quality and safety engineers in gas supply, beverage, and calibration industries
- Regulators and procurement teams specifying valve performance
