Overview
EN ISO 18274:2023 - "Welding consumables – Solid wire electrodes, solid strip electrodes, solid wires and solid rods for fusion welding of nickel and nickel alloys – Classification" - is the latest (2023) international/CEN standard for classifying solid welding consumables intended for fusion welding of nickel and nickel alloys. The classification is based on chemical composition, and applies to compositions where nickel content exceeds any other element. The standard replaces EN ISO 18274:2010 and is endorsed by CEN as EN ISO 18274:2023.

Key topics
- Scope and purpose: Defines requirements for classification of solid wire electrodes, solid strip electrodes, solid wires and solid rods for fusion welding of nickel and nickel alloys. Principles can also be applied to metal powders used for cladding, hardfacing and additive manufacturing.
- Product form symbols: Product form is indicated by a symbol - “S” for solid wire electrode, solid wire or solid rod, and “B” for solid strip electrode.
- Chemical composition designation: Classification symbols start with “Ni” followed by four digits. The first digit identifies the alloy group (for example:
- 1 = nickel‑molybdenum alloys,
- 2 = no significant alloy addition,
- 4 = nickel‑copper alloys,
- 5 = nickel‑copper with Al/Ti for precipitation hardening,
- 6/7/8/9 = various nickel‑chromium/iron/precipitation‑hardening categories).
Remaining digits indicate the specific alloy composition (designation system described in Annex A).
- Technical content: Includes clauses on symbols and requirements, chemical analysis, mechanical properties of weld metal, rounding procedure, retests, technical delivery conditions and designation. Annexes provide the designation system, descriptions/uses, and corresponding national classifications with typical tensile strengths.
Applications and users
- Practical uses: Selection and procurement of welding consumables for fusion welding of nickel and nickel alloys in industries requiring corrosion resistance, high temperature performance or specific mechanical properties - e.g., petrochemical, power generation, aerospace, marine, chemical processing, and additive manufacturing (powder cladding/hardfacing).
- Primary users: Welding engineers, materials/specification engineers, QA/QC personnel, procurement teams, manufacturers of filler materials, and standards committees.
