Overview
EN ISO 18541-1:2021 (Road vehicles - Standardized access to automotive repair and maintenance information (RMI) - Part 1) defines the general structure and use-case scope for the ISO 18541 series. It frames standardized access to automotive repair and maintenance information (RMI) for light passenger vehicles and light commercial vehicles. The standard describes real-world scenarios - servicing, roadside assistance, inspection, diagnosis, repair, maintenance and ECU updating/replacement - and sets out how RMI systems (web-based access, contact information and a security framework) should operate. Annex A specifies requirements for granting access to security-related RMI following the SERMI scheme.
Key topics and requirements
- Document scope & structure: Overview of the ISO 18541 series and how individual parts interrelate.
- Use case definitions: Extensive, practical use cases (authentication, vehicle identification, diagnostics, ECU updates, maintenance records, etc.) that define functional requirements for RMI systems.
- Access control & security: Requirements for user authentication, authorization and administration; specifically access to security-related RMI governed by the SERMI scheme (Annex A).
- RMI delivery models: Web-based access, contact pointers for specific RMI, and a security framework to protect sensitive data such as vehicle theft protection measures.
- Information retrieval and content types: Standardized methods to search and retrieve workshop procedures, wiring diagrams, technical service bulletins (TSBs), recalls, maintenance schedules, spare parts, special tools, labour times and other technical documents.
- Vehicle identification: Use cases for identifying vehicles using VIN and product feature data to ensure accurate RMI retrieval.
- ECU management: Use cases covering updating, replacing and tuning electronic control units (ECUs), including secure access and update workflows.
- Diagnostics & maintenance history: DTC resolution, integrated diagnostics scenarios and electronic maintenance history management.
Practical applications
- Enables independent workshops, franchised dealers and roadside assistance providers to access the exact RMI needed to diagnose and repair vehicles efficiently.
- Supports secure ECU updates and reprogramming while protecting anti-theft and security-related information.
- Facilitates standardized search/navigation across manufacturer RMI repositories for faster repair workflows and accurate parts/service selection.
- Helps tool and diagnostic equipment vendors align integrations with standardized RMI access models for better interoperability.
Who should use this standard
- Vehicle manufacturers and OEM technical information teams
- Independent repairers and dealer networks
- Diagnostic tool and VCI developers
- Fleet operators and maintenance managers
- Regulators and conformity assessment bodies engaged in vehicle serviceability and security
