EN ISO 19232-1:2013 - Non-destructive testing - Image quality of radiographs - Part 1 specifies the device and method for determining radiographic image quality value using wire-type image quality indicators (IQIs). It defines the IQI construction, wire series, designation, material choices, marking, placement and the procedure for reading the image quality value from a radiograph. This part is the wire-type complement to the ISO 19232 series for radiographic image quality assessment.

IQI construction:

Based on a series of 19 wires (W1 to W19) of specified nominal diameters and tolerances.
IQIs are assembled as seven consecutive wires from overlapping ranges (W1–W7, W6–W12, W10–W16, W13–W19) with wire lengths of 10 mm, 25 mm or 50 mm.

Designation and marking:

Written designation format e.g. IQI ISO 19232-1 - W 10 FE-25 (wire number, material symbol, length).
IQIs must be marked with the thickest wire number, wire material letters (e.g. FE, CU, TI, AL), and ISO identification.

Materials:

Wires are made from a single material per IQI and embedded in a protective covering that does not affect image quality.
Recommended wire materials include copper (CU), steel/iron (FE), titanium (TI) and aluminium (AL) for matching absorber properties of test objects.

Selection and placement:

Select IQI wire material and wire range to match the material under test and expected image quality value.
Place the IQI on the side facing the radiation source (or adjacent to the detector with an “F” marker on the radiograph).
View radiographs under conditions specified in ISO 5580.

Conformity:

IQIs must be delivered with a declaration of conformity (ISO/IEC 17050-1).

Conversion and cross-reference:

Annex A gives guidance for converting ASTM E747-04 wire identities to ISO wire IQI numbers.
