Overview
EN ISO 20502:2016 (identical to ISO 20502:2005 including Cor 1:2009) specifies a standardized method to determine the adhesion of ceramic coatings by scratch testing. The procedure uses a diamond stylus (typically Rockwell C geometry) drawn across a coated surface under either a progressive or constant normal force to provoke adhesive and/or cohesive failure. The method is intended primarily for fine ceramics / advanced ceramics with coating thicknesses up to 20 µm and is generally applied in the macro force range (about 1–100 N), with calibration required if other force ranges are used.
