Overview
EN ISO 20957-2:2024 - Stationary training equipment, Part 2 - specifies additional specific safety requirements and test methods for stationary strength training equipment (stacked weight selectorized systems and alternative resistance systems such as elastic cords, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, magnetic, springs and externally loaded weights). It is a CEN-endorsed adoption of ISO 20957-2:2024, replacing the 2021 edition, and complements the general requirements in ISO 20957-1:2013. Applicable equipment classes are H, S and I. Note: accuracy classes are not applicable to safety for this equipment type.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard focuses on practical safety and conformity testing rather than performance tuning. Major technical topics include:
- Stability - requirements and tests for free-standing and externally loaded equipment to prevent tipping.
- Loading and weight handling - requirements for selectorized systems, externally loaded equipment, weight posts and retention methods.
- Endurance and durability - fatigue and endurance testing for structural components and moving parts.
- Access to squeeze, shear and pinch points - design limits and test methods to reduce user entrapment risk.
- Weight disc clearance and retention - specifications for safe stacking, spacing and securing of weight plates.
- Pull-in points and entrapment - identification and testing of hazardous pull‑in zones.
- Adjustment and locking mechanisms - safe design and locking tests for adjustable parts.
- Marking, instructions and warnings - required user information, maintenance and assembly instructions.
- Test methods - dimensional checks, visual and tactile inspection, performance testing, finger entrapment, stability testing, static and impact testing, and detailed test reporting.
Practical applications and users
EN ISO 20957-2:2024 is intended for:
- Manufacturers and product designers - incorporate safety requirements early in design for selectorized and externally loaded strength equipment.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors - apply specified test methods (stability, loading, endurance, entrapment) to certify equipment.
- Procurement officers and gym operators - evaluate equipment safety, compliance and selection criteria for public and commercial facilities.
- Regulatory and compliance teams - use the standard as a harmonized means to demonstrate conformity with EU General Product Safety requirements and Commission Decision (EU) No 476/2011 where cited in the Official Journal.
