ISO 21029-2:2015 specifies operational requirements for transportable vacuum insulated cryogenic vessels of not more than 1 000 l volume designed to operate above atmospheric pressure. Appropriate parts may be used as a guidance for a vessel design to operate open to the atmosphere. For cryogenic vessels designed for personal medical use, other requirements can apply. The scope includes putting into service, filling, withdrawal, transport within the location, storage, maintenance, periodic inspection, and emergency procedures. For the transportation of these vessels by public road, rail, sea, and air, other additional requirements can apply; these are defined in specific regulations. Transportable cryogenic vessels of not more than 1 000 l volume are often partly equipped by the manufacturer, but can be installed or re-installed by another party, such as the operator or owner. For this reason, some of the scope of ISO 21029-2:2015, which includes putting into service, inspection, filling, maintenance, and emergency procedure, overlaps with ISO 21029‑1.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 21029-2:2015 (ISO 21029-2:2015) defines the operational requirements for transportable vacuum‑insulated cryogenic vessels with a capacity of not more than 1 000 litres, designed to operate above atmospheric pressure. The standard covers practical aspects of putting vessels into service, filling and withdrawal of product, storage, movement within a site, maintenance, periodic inspection, and emergency procedures. It complements ISO 21029‑1 (design, fabrication, inspection and tests) and supports compliance with the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods where applicable.
Key topics and requirements
The standard focuses on operational safety and lifecycle activities rather than vessel design. Important technical topics include:
- Preliminaries before service: marking, labelling and handover documentation required at delivery.
- Personnel training: competency and instruction for operators, maintenance staff and emergency responders.
- Safety requirements: general safety considerations, safety distances, and site risk controls.
- Putting into service: checks and commissioning steps prior to first use.
- Location and on-site transport: guidance for safe placement and movement within a facility (note: public transport has separate regulations).
- Filling and withdrawal procedures: prefill checks, filling preparations, after‑fill checks and safe withdrawal practices.
- Change of service and taking out of service: procedures when switching product or retiring a vessel.
- Maintenance, repair and periodic inspection: routine care and inspection intervals to ensure continued safe operation.
- Emergency equipment and procedures: required response measures in case of leaks, overpressure or other incidents.
- Additional requirements for flammable gases: special safety, electrical equipment and earthing considerations for flammable cryogens.
Practical applications and users
EN ISO 21029-2:2015 is intended for:
- Manufacturers who supply transportable cryogenic vessels and provide initial equipment and documentation.
- Operators and owners who install, re‑install, commission, fill, maintain and inspect vessels on-site.
- Maintenance personnel and inspectors performing periodic checks and repairs.
- Safety managers and emergency planners establishing site procedures and training.
- Regulatory bodies and auditors using the standard as a reference for operational compliance.
Practical benefits include improved operational safety, reduced risk of incidents during filling/transfer, clearer responsibilities between manufacturer and operator, and alignment with international transport and hazardous‑goods guidance.
Related standards and notes
- ISO 21029‑1 - design, fabrication, inspection and tests (complements Part 2).
- UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods and national transport regulations (road, rail, sea, air) - additional legal requirements may apply.
- Local occupational safety and environmental regulations take precedence where they conflict with ISO 21029‑2:2015.
