This document specifies the requirements for qualification, application, inspection, testing handling and storage of materials for plant application of single-layer fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) coatings applied externally for the corrosion protection of bare steel pipe for use in pipeline transportation systems for oil and gas industries as defined in ISO 13623. NOTE Pipes coated in accordance with this document are considered suitable for additional protection by means of cathodic protection.
Abstract
Overview
SIST EN ISO 21809-2:2026 establishes comprehensive requirements for the qualification, application, inspection, testing, handling, and storage of materials used in the plant application of external single-layer fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) coatings. These coatings are designed specifically for the corrosion protection of bare steel pipelines that are either buried or submerged, as used in oil and gas pipeline transportation systems, including those supporting lower carbon energy infrastructures.
This European and International Standard, developed by CEN in collaboration with ISO Technical Committees, is a key reference for ensuring the longevity, integrity, and safety of pipelines operating under demanding environmental conditions. The standard supersedes EN ISO 21809-2:2014, ensuring alignment with the latest industrial practices and harmonized requirements.
Key Topics
-
Scope of Application
- Addresses the qualification, application, inspection, and testing of single-layer FBE coatings.
- Focuses on external corrosion protection for bare steel pipe in oil, gas, and lower carbon energy sectors in line with ISO 13623.
-
Coating Requirements
- Defines the use of single-layer fusion-bonded epoxy coatings for pipelines.
- Stipulates qualification processes for coating materials, application procedures, and coating systems.
- Includes detailed requirements for surface preparation, coating thickness, cutback lengths, and curing.
-
Inspection and Testing
- Specifies criteria and procedures for inspecting and testing both the incoming materials and finished coated pipes.
- Details inspection methods for critical characteristics like adhesion, thickness, porosity, and holiday (coating discontinuity) detection.
-
Repair, Handling, and Storage
- Offers protocols for repairing holidays and large defects in applied coatings.
- Sets requirements for proper handling and storage in plant environments to prevent damage or contamination.
-
Documentation and Marking
- Outlines the need for batch certificates, inspection certificates, and thorough test reporting.
- Requires clear marking of coated pipelines for traceability and compliance purposes.
Applications
SIST EN ISO 21809-2:2026 is vital in the oil and gas sector and is increasingly relevant for lower carbon energy infrastructure. Practical uses include:
-
Pipeline Construction
- Ensures external steel pipelines are adequately protected against corrosion in underground or submerged environments.
-
Pipeline Maintenance
- Provides standardized processes for inspecting and repairing FBE coatings, thereby extending asset life and preventing leaks or environmental incidents.
-
Quality Assurance
- Supports asset owners, contractors, and coating applicators in meeting contractual requirements and international best practices for coated pipelines.
-
Compatibility with Cathodic Protection
- Pipelines coated per this standard are suitable for additional cathodic protection, enhancing their long-term performance.
By applying this standard, operators can reduce the risk of coating failure, lower the need for expensive repairs, and maintain the reliability of energy delivery systems.
