Overview
EN ISO 22477-1:2018 - Geotechnical investigation and testing - Part 1: Testing of piles: static compression load testing - specifies how to perform static axial compression (maintained) pile load tests to determine a pile’s load–displacement behaviour and compressive resistance. The standard applies to vertical and raking piles and to all pile types, but it excludes constant-penetration-rate and cyclic load tests. It is intended to be used in conjunction with EN 1997-1 (Eurocode 7) for deriving design values and partial factors from test results.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: Defines objectives - checking that a pile behaves as designed and measuring its resistance.
- Equipment and setup:
- Reaction devices and reaction system requirements.
- Force-input systems (jacks, hydraulic systems) and calibration requirements (referencing ISO 7500-1 for force-measuring verification).
- Instruments for measuring pile head displacement and load (including pile instrumentation options).
- Test procedure:
- Test preparation (protection, test pile construction and pile-cap preparation).
- Loading procedures: maintained load tests with specified load step sequences, durations and measuring intervals; provisions for single- and multiple-cycle procedures.
- Definition of maximum test load and guidance on measuring intervals and data acquisition.
- Data handling and reporting:
- Mandatory content of test reports: general information, detailed data records and an interpretative report with conclusions on measured resistance and behaviour.
- Annexes:
- Informative guidance on critical creep load in compression and bi-directional load testing.
Applications and practical value
- Provides standardized methods for static pile load testing, ensuring consistent, reliable measurement of pile capacity and settlement behaviour.
- Enables:
- Validation of pile performance against design assumptions.
- Derivation of characteristic pile resistance values for foundation design (used with Eurocode 7).
- Quality assurance and acceptance testing on construction projects.
- Typical uses include deep foundation verification for buildings, bridges, offshore structures and infrastructure where accurate pile capacity assessment is required.
Who should use this standard
- Geotechnical and foundation engineers performing or specifying pile load tests.
- Testing contractors and site technicians responsible for executing maintained static load tests.
- Structural engineers integrating pile test results into design per EN 1997-1.
- Consultants, laboratories and regulatory bodies involved in geotechnical investigation and construction quality control.
