Overview
EN ISO 22630:2015 - Oilseed meals - Determination of oil content - Rapid extraction method (ISO 22630:2015) is a CEN-endorsed method for quickly assessing the oil content of oilseed meals, pellets and expeller cakes. The standard is intended to evaluate the efficiency of de‑oiling processes by comparing the oil content of the original oilseed with the residual oil in by‑products. It is not intended for legal dispute cases (see ISO 734).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Principle: Wet milling the test portion in a micro‑ball mill with solvent, followed by solvent extraction, distillation of solvent and weighing the dried residue to determine oil content.
- Test portion: Typical sample mass is 5 g of well‑mixed test sample placed in an extraction thimble.
- Grinding and extraction:
- Wet grinding in a mechanical microgrinder (micro‑ball mill) with about 20 ml solvent for ~10 min (alternative: horizontal shaker 45 min at specified settings).
- Rinse and transfer to a continuous extraction apparatus (100–200 ml flask, extractor, reflux condenser).
- Cover the thimble with cotton wool and carry out reflux extraction; solvent is removed from the extract by distillation and residue dried and weighed.
- Solvents: Technical hexane, n‑hexane or light petroleum ether (specified boiling range and residue limits - residue on complete evaporation ≤ 2 mg/100 ml). Solvent recovered by distillation should not be reused for determinations.
- Apparatus & conditions: Analytical balance (0.001 g), drying oven at 103 °C ± 2 °C, extraction thimbles (25 × 100 mm) and appropriate microgrinder and extraction apparatus. Cooling required for PTFE grinding beakers.
- Results & quality: Method includes instructions for expression of results, repeatability/reproducibility assessment and interlaboratory precision checks.
Applications and users
- Quality control laboratories in the oilseed processing and animal feed industries for rapid monitoring of residual oil in meals, pellets and expeller cakes.
- Processing plants assessing de‑oiling efficiency of expellers or solvent extraction lines.
- Research and development teams optimizing extraction processes or product formulations.
- Contract and commercial testing labs performing routine compositional analysis.
