Overview
EN ISO 24022-2:2020 - "Plastics - Polystyrene (PS) moulding and extrusion materials - Part 2" is a CEN-adopted ISO standard that specifies how to prepare test specimens and determine the key properties of polystyrene (PS) moulding and extrusion materials. The document defines handling, pre-conditioning, injection-moulding conditions, specimen conditioning and the suitable test methods needed to produce reproducible, comparable material data for PS grades.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and purpose: Defines procedures and conditions for preparation of test specimens and for measuring properties that characterise PS moulding and extrusion materials. Properties are selected mainly from ISO 10350-1.
- Treatment before moulding: Pre-treatment of PS material is normally not required.
- Injection moulding: Specimens shall be injection-moulded in accordance with ISO 294-1 or ISO 294-3. Recommended processing conditions (from Table 1) include:
- Melt temperature: 220 °C
- Mould temperature: 45 °C
- Average injection velocity: 200 ± 20 mm/s
- Specimen geometry: Bar test specimens prepared per ISO 20753 are preferred because they give better precision than directly moulded final-dimension specimens.
- Quality and uniformity: Mouldings must be blemish-free with an appropriate hold pressure and checked for uniformity - specimen masses shall not differ by more than 1%.
- Conditioning: After moulding, specimens must be conditioned per ISO 291 for at least 16 h at 23 °C ± 2 °C and (50 ± 10)% relative humidity before testing.
- Testing environment & presentation: Unless otherwise stated, tests are run in the standard atmosphere (23 °C / 50% RH). Data presentation and supplementary rules follow ISO 10350-1.
Practical applications and users
Who uses EN ISO 24022-2:2020:
- Material suppliers and compounders producing PS grades for moulding and extrusion
- Quality assurance and test laboratories performing routine property verification
- Product designers and R&D teams requiring reliable PS material data for part design, simulation and material selection
- Manufacturers of injection-moulded and extruded parts needing comparable material specifications
- Certification bodies and procurement teams defining contract or regulatory requirements
Typical uses:
- Generating reproducible mechanical, thermal and flow property data for PS
- Comparing PS grades and compiling datasheets consistent with ISO 10350-1
- Establishing in-house test procedures aligned with international practice
- Supporting material selection, failure analysis and supplier evaluation
