ISO 24345:2006 describes a method for determining the resistance against separation of two layers of a resilient floor covering by peeling.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 24345:2012 (identical to ISO 24345:2006) defines a laboratory method for measuring the peel resistance of resilient floor coverings - the force required to separate two bonded layers by peeling. This standard is intended for evaluating delamination resistance of non‑textile resilient floor coverings and is widely used in product development, quality control and conformity assessment.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and purpose: Determines resistance against separation of two layers of a resilient floor covering by a standardized peel test.
- Specimen selection:
- Take a representative sample and prepare six test pieces: minimum length 150 mm, width (50 ± 1) mm.
- Distance from the outer edge of the sample to the nearest test-piece edge: at least 100 mm.
- Three specimens cut in the machine (length) direction and three in the transverse direction.
- Conditioning and atmosphere:
- Condition test pieces at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % RH for at least 24 hours; maintain these conditions during testing.
- Apparatus and test speed:
- Use a tensile testing machine with suitable load cell and recording device capable of holding a constant separation speed.
- Separation (peel) speed: (100 ± 5) mm/min.
- Test procedure:
- Initiate an initial separation length adequate to grip the layers. If a solvent is used for initial separation, remove it by storing the specimen in a ventilated oven at 60 °C for two hours, then re‑condition.
- Fix the specimen in jaws (approx. 50 mm apart) and record the force trace during peel.
- Calculation and reporting:
- Ignore the first and last quarter of the recorded trace. Use a screen method to read cross‑point forces from the central trace region.
- Report mean peel resistance per 50 mm width, rounded to the nearest 5 N.
- Test report must include identification, test date, conditioning history, deviations, mean and minimum values (or description if delamination did not occur).
- Precision: An interlaboratory study is referenced to determine repeatability/reproducibility.
Applications and Users
- Who uses it: flooring manufacturers, independent test laboratories, product designers, procurement/specifiers, certification bodies, and building inspectors.
- Practical uses:
- Verify adhesive performance between layers (surface vinyl, backing layers).
- Quality control during production and incoming material inspection.
- Comparative product testing, development of more durable laminates and multilayer floors.
- Supporting claims for warranty, compliance, and tender specifications.
- Failure analysis and root‑cause investigation of delamination events.
