This document specifies a method for determining the density of paints, varnishes and related products using a metal or Gay-Lussac pycnometer. The method is limited to materials of low or medium viscosity at the temperature of test. The Hubbard pycnometer (see ISO 3507) can be used for highly viscous materials.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 2811-1:2023 - Paints and varnishes: Determination of density - Part 1: Pycnometer method (ISO 2811-1:2023) specifies a standardized laboratory procedure to determine the density of paints, varnishes and related products using a pycnometer (metal or Gay‑Lussac type). The method is intended for materials of low to medium viscosity at the test temperature; highly viscous materials should be tested using the Hubbard pycnometer (see ISO 3507). This edition updates previous versions and adds a requirement to de‑aerate samples to improve reproducibility.
Key topics and requirements
- Test principle: Fill a calibrated pycnometer with the product, weigh it and calculate density from the mass of product and the known pycnometer volume (ρ = mass/volume).
- Pycnometer types: Metal pycnometers (50 cm3 or 100 cm3) and glass Gay‑Lussac pycnometers (10–100 cm3) are specified. Choice affects balance accuracy and handling.
- Temperature control: Standard reference temperature is (23.0 ± 0.5) °C; alternative agreed temperatures (e.g., 20.0 ± 0.5 °C) are permitted. Sample and apparatus must be conditioned and temperature variation kept within 0.5 °C.
- Sample preparation: Follow ISO 15528 (sampling) and ISO 1513 (sample preparation). The sample must be free of air bubbles; de‑aeration is now required where appropriate to ensure reproducible density results.
- Apparatus and metrology: Analytical balance with appropriate maximum permissible error (dependent on pycnometer volume), thermometer (±0.2 °C), and temperature control (chamber or water bath).
- Calibration and procedure: Pycnometer calibration is mandatory (Annex A gives an example). Procedure details include conditioning, weighing empty and filled pycnometer, and careful wiping of excess liquid to avoid weighing errors.
- Precision: The standard includes provisions for repeatability and reproducibility limits and requires reporting of test conditions and results.
Applications and users
- Quality control and incoming inspection in paint, coatings and varnish manufacturing
- R&D labs developing formulations where density affects pigmentation, filling properties, and application characteristics
- Regulatory and conformity testing where standardized, traceable density measurements are required
- Laboratories comparing batches, performing material specifications, or calculating solids content and formulation densities
