Overview
EN ISO 28781:2010 / ISO 28781:2010 specifies requirements for subsurface barrier valves and related equipment used in the petroleum and natural gas industries. The standard covers the life‑cycle elements needed to ensure reliable barrier function in tubulars for pre‑ and post‑production or injection activities: design, design validation, manufacturing, functional evaluation, repair/redress, handling and storage. It is explicitly not intended for installation/maintenance procedures, external control systems, or as an emergency/fail‑safe flow‑control safety device.
This document was adopted by CEN as EN ISO 28781:2010 and is intended for global use by suppliers, manufacturers and purchasers of downhole barrier devices.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Functional requirements: Definitions of the barrier valve types and the intended functional characteristics (directional pressure holding, leakage limits, environmental compatibility).
- Design criteria and materials: Requirements for selection of materials, corrosion/environmental compatibility and documentation of design decisions.
- Design verification and validation: Structured validation grades (V1 to V3) that allow purchasers to specify the level of testing and qualification; normative annexes provide detailed validation and testing protocols.
- Manufacturing and quality: Two quality grades (Q1 highest, Q2 minimum) with traceability, quality control, material documentation and supplier obligations.
- Performance envelope and functional testing: Defined performance envelopes, assembly and functional tests, shear device validation and acceptance criteria (normative annexes C–E).
- Repair, redress, handling and storage: Requirements and procedures to maintain product integrity during refurbishment and logistics.
- Documentation and traceability: Product identification, manufacturing records and documentation required to demonstrate conformity.
- Exclusions: The standard excludes installation, control systems not integral to the valve, and several product categories and other ISO standards (see Related Standards).
Note: The standard uses SI units (with USC references where applicable) and contains both normative and informative annexes (B–E normative; A, F, G, H informative).
Applications and Users
EN ISO 28781 is used by:
- Valve manufacturers and suppliers to define design, manufacturing and testing obligations.
- Oil & gas operators and well engineers selecting barrier valves for well interventions, production/injection operations and zonal isolation tasks.
- Procurement and quality managers who require contractually specified quality (Q1/Q2) and validation (V1–V3) levels.
- Inspection and testing organizations performing conformity assessment, functional testing and repair validation.
Primary applications include well intervention, temporary formation isolation during completion/repair activities and controlled isolation inside tubulars where a non‑emergency barrier is acceptable.
Related Standards
This standard explicitly does not cover products governed by:
- ISO 17078, ISO 16070, ISO 14310, ISO 10432, ISO 10423
and excludes items such as downhole chokes, wellhead plugs, sliding sleeves, casing‑mounted flow‑control valves, injection valves, well‑condition‑activated valves and drill‑stem test tools. Users should reference these related standards when those product types or functions are relevant.
