This document specifies the general procedure to be followed in determining the dynamic viscosity of unpigmented coating materials, such as paints, varnishes and related products, as well as binders at a shear rate range between 9 000 s−1 and 12 000 s−1. It describes an absolute viscosity measurement with cone-plate measuring geometry at high shear rates. The measured value gives information about the resistance offered by the material to brushing, spraying and roller coating during application. The method specified in this document is suitable for all paints and varnishes whether they are Newtonian in behaviour or not. For materials containing dispersions of large particles, the measuring geometry is expected to be adapted.
Abstract
Overview
SIST EN ISO 2884-1:2025 is the latest international standard established by CEN and ISO for the determination of the dynamic viscosity of unpigmented paints, varnishes, and related coating materials using rotational viscometers. This updated standard specifies the general procedure for measuring absolute viscosity at high shear rates (between 9,000 s⁻¹ and 12,000 s⁻¹) using a cone-plate measuring geometry. It applies to both Newtonian and non-Newtonian coating materials, providing valuable insights into the material's resistance during common application methods such as brushing, spraying, and roller coating.
The standard supersedes the 2006 version and reflects current state-of-the-art technology tailored for improved precision and broader industry relevance.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability Specifies viscosity measurement for unpigmented coating materials and binders at high shear rates. Suitable for various paint and varnish formulations, including those with non-Newtonian behavior. Adaptations of measuring geometry are advised for samples with large particle dispersions.
-
Measuring Assembly Utilizes a rotational viscometer equipped with a cone-plate geometry design to achieve high shear rates, delivering absolute viscosity data critical for quality control and product development.
-
Sample Preparation and Handling Sampling follows ISO 15528 and ISO 1513 standards to ensure representative and contamination-free samples. Particle-free samples are preferred to avoid damage and anomalous measurement results.
-
Procedure and Conditions The measurement process emphasizes temperature control, typically (23 ± 0.2) °C, and operational parameters outlined in device manufacturer specifications. The procedure demands meticulous preparation, measurement in duplicate, and cleaning protocols to maintain accuracy.
-
Measurement Accuracy and Repeatability The standard enforces strict limits on repeatability, ensuring viscosity deviations do not exceed ±5% for consecutive tests under controlled conditions. Recommendations are provided for addressing artifacts like gap emptying through alternative measuring geometries.
-
Test Reporting Requirements Detailed documentation of sample identification, preparation, device calibration, measuring profile, and results is mandated to maintain traceability and support standard compliance.
Applications
SIST EN ISO 2884-1:2025 plays a critical role in quality control, research and development, and regulatory compliance across various sectors where coating materials are essential. Typical applications include:
-
Paint and Varnish Manufacturing Ensuring consistency in viscosity aids in optimizing product performance for ease of application and finish quality.
-
Coating Performance Analysis High shear rate viscosity values indicate how coatings will behave under mechanical forces during brushing, spraying, and rolling processes.
-
Material Formulation and Adjustment Real-time viscosity data help formulators modify binder concentrations, solvents, or additives to meet application and durability requirements.
-
Quality Assurance in Binders and Related Products Verification of viscosity parameters supports uniformity and reliability in raw material batches before production.
Related Standards
SIST EN ISO 2884-1:2025 complements and refers to several other essential standards in paint and varnish testing and rheology, including:
