Overview
EN ISO 30013:2011 - also published as ISO 30013:2011 and endorsed by CEN - defines laboratory methods for exposing rubber and plastics hoses to artificial light sources to determine changes in colour, appearance and other physical properties. The standard covers three laboratory light sources: xenon‑arc, fluorescent UV, and open‑flame carbon‑arc lamps, and provides procedures to simulate both outdoor and indoor exposure conditions.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope of testing
- Methods for exposure to xenon‑arc, fluorescent UV and open‑flame carbon‑arc lamps.
- Simulated outdoor exposure (method A) and indoor exposure (method B) options.
- Results from different light sources or exposure conditions are not comparable.
- Test piece types
- Four specified types (two strained on exposure, two unstrained):
- Type 1: sample of hose, length L calculated by formula L = π(r + d/2) + 2d (bent on a mandrel).
- Type 2: strip cut longitudinally, 150 mm × 25 mm, mounted convex side exposed (strained).
- Type 3: cover strip, 100 mm × 25 mm, unstrained.
- Type 4: full sample ≈ 150 mm, unstrained, mounted so it is not stressed.
- Test setup and measurement
- Details on conditioning, number of test pieces, mounting/holders, radiation direction and exposed surface.
- Guidance on light sources, exposure cycles, radiant exposure measurement, and removal/inspection procedures.
- Results and reporting
- Assessment of cracking and appearance, colour change (grey scale / colorimetry), and changes in physical properties.
- Test report requirements and recommended properties to assess after exposure.
Applications and users
- Practical uses:
- Product development and material selection for hoses intended for outdoor or indoor environments.
- Quality control and comparative performance testing of hose covers and assemblies.
- Regulatory compliance and procurement specifications where light‑induced ageing is relevant.
- Typical users:
- Hose manufacturers, materials engineers, independent testing laboratories, OEMs specifying hose durability, standards bodies and conformity assessment organizations.
