This document specifies a method for determining the non-volatile matter by volume (NVV) of coating materials by determining the practical dry-film density. This method determines the volume percentage of non-volatile matter in paints, varnishes and related products by measuring the density of a dry coating for any specified temperature range and period of drying or curing. The non-volatile matter content is determined in accordance with ISO 3251. Using the non-volatile matter by volume results obtained in accordance with this document, it is possible to calculate the practical spreading rate of coating materials. This method specifies an additional shape of plate to those described in ISO 3233‑1 and is suitable for all products which can be applied by dipping. This document is not applicable to coating materials which exceed the Critical Pigment Volume Concentration (CPVC). Annex A gives an overview of the existing methods for the determination of non-volatile matter content and of non-volatile matter volume.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 3233-2:2019 - "Paints and varnishes - Determination of the percentage volume of non-volatile matter - Part 2" specifies a laboratory method to determine the non-volatile matter by volume (NVV) of coating materials. The method combines the mass-based non-volatile matter determination in accordance with ISO 3251 with a practical measurement of dry-film density on coated test panels using the Archimedes principle. Results enable calculation of the practical spreading rate for paints, varnishes and related products. This part is suitable for products applied by dipping and is not applicable to coatings that exceed the Critical Pigment Volume Concentration (CPVC).
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability
- Volume percentage of non-volatile matter (NVV) for coatings within CPVC limits.
- Suitable for dip-applied products; adds an additional plate shape to ISO 3233‑1.
- Combined measurement principle
- NV content by mass: determined per ISO 3251.
- Dry-film density: determined practically on coated plates by the Archimedes principle (weighing in air and immersion liquid).
- Test conditions and controls
- Drying/curing period and temperature range are specified for the coating before density measurement.
- Minimum coated mass requirement (introduced in the 2019 revision): at least 25 mg of coating on the plate to ensure reliable results.
- Supporting measurements
- Evaluation and precision
- Calculations for NVV, practical dry-film density and practical spreading rate.
- Precision statements covering repeatability and reproducibility are included.
Applications
- Quality control and batch verification in paint and coatings manufacturing.
- Formulation development: correlating solid content, density and coverage.
- Specification and tendering: providing practical spreading rate and NVV values for technical datasheets.
- Laboratory testing services and certification bodies validating coating performance.
- Useful for R&D when selecting pigments/resins to meet coverage and application targets.
