Overview
EN ISO 34101-1:2020 (ISO 34101-1:2019) - adopted by CEN - defines high-level requirements for a cocoa sustainability management system covering sustainable cocoa bean production and applicable post-harvest processes. It addresses management-system elements across the supply chain segment that produces cocoa (farms, farmer groups and organizations) and specifies requirements for internal traceability of sustainably produced cocoa beans. Post-harvest processes explicitly include pod‑breaking, fermentation, drying, sorting, packing, transport and storage.
Key topics and requirements
The standard follows a management-system structure similar to other ISO system standards and includes requirements for:
- Context & Scope
- Understanding the organization, interested parties and setting the scope of the cocoa sustainability management system.
- Leadership & Policy
- Top management commitment, sustainability policy and defined roles/responsibilities (including registered farmer representation).
- Planning
- Risk/opportunity analysis, cocoa sustainability objectives and planning to achieve them.
- Support
- Resource allocation, competence, awareness, communication and documented information control; data ownership for registered farmers.
- Operation
- Operational planning and control, annual work plans, cocoa farm development plans, management of changes and external provision.
- Traceability
- Internal traceability mechanisms to keep sustainably produced beans segregated and identifiable within the producing organization.
- Performance evaluation & Improvement
- Monitoring, measurement, analysis, internal audit, management review, corrective actions and continual improvement.
Informative and normative annexes cover farm diagnostics, farm development plan implementation, cost guidance and farmer-facing guidance (Annexes A–E).
Important compliance note: only organizations that meet the management-system requirements of EN ISO 34101‑1 or ISO 34101‑4 (Annex A/B) and the performance requirements of ISO 34101‑2 may claim their cocoa beans have been sustainably produced.
Applications - who uses this standard
EN ISO 34101-1:2020 is intended for:
- Cocoa farming organizations, cooperatives and aggregators establishing sustainability systems
- Supply‑chain actors seeking traceable cocoa from farm level (exporters, processors, traders)
- Certification bodies and auditors assessing management-system conformity
- Buyers and retailers requiring documented sustainability and internal traceability
- NGOs and policymakers developing sustainability programs and procurement criteria
Practical uses include structuring farmer registration, implementing cocoa farm development plans, setting up internal traceability controls, and documenting continual improvement for market or compliance claims.
