ISO 3452-3:2013 describes two types of reference blocks: Type 1 reference blocks are used to determine the sensitivity levels of both fluorescent and colour contrast penetrant product families; Type 2 reference blocks are used for routine assessment of the performance of both fluorescent and colour contrast penetrant testing. The reference blocks are to be used in accordance with ISO 3452-1:2013.

EN ISO 3452-3:2013 - "Non-destructive testing - Penetrant testing - Part 3: Reference test blocks" (CEN endorsed) specifies the design, construction and identification of reference test blocks used to assess and calibrate penetrant testing (PT) systems. The standard defines two types of reference blocks and requires their use in accordance with ISO 3452-1 (general principles). This part is intended for use with both fluorescent penetrant and colour contrast penetrant methods.

Set of four rectangular panels (typical 35 × 100 × 2 mm) on a brass base.

Used to determine sensitivity levels of penetrant product families (fluorescent and colour contrast - colour systems use 30 µm and 50 µm panels).

Type 2 reference blocks (routine performance assessment)

Single rectangular panel: 155 × 50 × 2.5 mm, base material stainless steel X2 Cr Ni Mo 17-12-3 (HV20 ≈ 150 ± 10).
Rinsability area: four adjacent 25 × 35 mm zones with surface roughnesses R = 2.5 µm, 5 µm, 10 µm, 15 µm (R = 2.5 may be sand-blasted; others by electroerosion).
Defect area: plated with electroless nickel 60 µm ± 3 µm and a thin hard chromium 0.5–1.5 µm; heat-treated to reach specified hardnesses (nickel HV0.2 ≈ 500–600; post-chrome heat treatment to HV0.3 ≈ 900–1 000).
Five equidistant artificial indentations (created from the reverse side) with applied forces typically 2.0, 3.5, 5.0, 6.5, 8.0 kN and typical defect diameters ≈ 3–5.5 mm.

Documentation and identification

Each block must be identified with the ISO number, supplier ID and serial number.
A Type 3.1 certificate (ISO 10474 / EN 10204) must accompany each block showing measured defect sizes and rinsability roughness values.
