This European standard specifies the characteristics of equipment used in penetrant testing. The characteristics of equipment required for carrying out penetrant testing depend on the number of tests to be made and on the size of the components to be tested. Two types of equipment are included in this standard: a) equipment suitable for carrying out in situ penetrant testing techniques; b) fixed installations.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 3452-4:1998 - Non-destructive testing - Penetrant testing - Part 4: Equipment (CEN/ISO) specifies the required characteristics of equipment used to perform penetrant testing (PT). The standard covers both portable in situ equipment and fixed installations, and links equipment selection to the number of tests and component sizes. It is intended to ensure safe, effective and reproducible penetrant inspections in industrial quality and maintenance environments.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Equipment types
- Portable in situ: spray units, brushes, lint‑free cloths, UV-A and white light sources, personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Fixed installations: purpose-built tanks, spray booths, conveyors and process stations.
- Materials and construction
- All plant materials (tanks, pipework, ducting) must resist chemical attack by penetrant and not alter penetrant properties.
- Health, safety & environment
- Closed storage for chemicals, extraction/ventilation for spray application, effluent treatment or recirculation meeting local discharge requirements, and compliance with local HS&E rules.
- Process areas defined
- Preparation/precleaning and degreasing (including cooling areas).
- Penetrant application (air-assisted, airless, electrostatic, brushing or immersion).
- Penetrant drain and excess removal (immersion tanks with agitation or spray-wash).
- Emulsifier application (hydrophilic via immersion/flow-on/foam; lipophilic by immersion).
- Drying (suction, rotation, warm air ovens - warm air max 80 °C; forced-air ovens for uniform drying).
- Developer application (powder: dust‑storm, electrostatic, flock, tumbler, insufflator, fluidized bed; water-suspension tanks; solvent-based spray cabinets; water-soluble immersion tanks).
- Inspection: space for movement, non-reflecting surfaces, lighting control.
- Inspection lighting
- Fluorescent PT: UV‑A lamps meeting prEN ISO 3059; ambient visible light should not exceed 20 lx.
- Colour‑contrast PT: white light at not less than 500 lx at the inspection surface.
- Operational controls
- Spray-wash guns: as low a pressure as practicable, water temperature ≤ 50 °C, and pressure measured near the nozzle.
- Tanks fitted with lids and retaining trays; penetrant drain and recovery provisions.
Applications and users
- Practical applications: surface defect detection for welded joints, castings, forgings, aerospace components, pressure vessels, maintenance inspections and production quality control.
- Primary users: NDT technicians, quality managers, plant and process engineers, equipment manufacturers, and HS&E officers who design, install, operate or audit penetrant testing facilities.
