EN ISO 3497:2000 / ISO 3497:2000 specifies X‑ray spectrometric methods for measuring the thickness of metallic coatings. It covers both wavelength‑ and energy‑dispersive X‑ray fluorescence (XRF) techniques that determine coating mass per unit area (and, with a known density, linear thickness). The standard describes principles of operation, apparatus, calibration, measurement procedures, factors affecting results and reporting. Used to measure and control thickness of electroplated, galvanic and vacuum metallic coatings (e.g., zinc, nickel, chrome) in:

Quality control laboratories and production lines in surface‑finishing and metalworking industries
Coating suppliers, certification bodies and testing laboratories
Research & development where nondestructive, rapid thickness checks are needed

Beneficial for process control, acceptance testing, conformance to specifications, and verifying multilayer coating systems (up to three layers or components as described).
