Overview
EN ISO 3822-3:2018 - "Acoustics - Laboratory tests on noise emission from appliances and equipment used in water supply installations - Part 3" - specifies the mounting and operating conditions for measuring noise emission from in-line valves and appliances used in water supply systems. It is intended for laboratory tests that evaluate noise generated by devices that control water flow, pressure or temperature. The standard applies to in-line valves and appliances up to nominal size DN 32 and to systems with a maximum water flow rate of 1.6 l/s. It complements the measurement method given in ISO 3822-1.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Applicable to conventional in-line valves (stop valves, control valves, pressure reducing valves, mixing valves, water meters, relief valves, etc.) with DN ≤ 32 and flow ≤ 1.6 l/s.
- Mounting requirements
- Devices must be installed between two straight pipe sections appropriate to the end-connections; each straight piece shall be at least ten diameters long.
- Devices installed in their normal working position (vertical or horizontal); tests performed in the noisier position determined by a short preliminary test.
- Operating and test conditions
- General test conditions cover water temperature, outlet arrangements, flow regulating and discharge systems, test pressures, and water flow rate.
- Procedures for device types
- Specific test procedures for stop valves, control valves, flow-operated appliances, automatic pressure- or temperature-operated appliances, and safety groups.
- Reporting
- Requirements for the test report content to ensure reproducibility and comparability of noise emission results.
- Informative material
- Annexes (e.g., example of low-noise flow resistance) and normative references such as ISO 3822-1 and ISO 49.
Applications and Who Uses It
- Acoustic and test laboratories - to perform standardized laboratory noise measurements on in-line valves and appliances.
- Manufacturers and product designers - to assess and reduce noise emission during product development and to support compliance/claims.
- Building services and HVAC engineers - to select low-noise components for water supply installations in residential and commercial buildings.
- Certification bodies and regulators - to evaluate products against consistent acoustic criteria.
- Installers and specifiers - to follow mounting and operating guidance that affects in-situ noise performance.
