ISO 3950:2016 provides a system for designating teeth or areas of the oral cavity using two digits.
Abstract
Overview
SIST EN ISO 3950:2016 is a European adoption of the international standard ISO 3950:2016, titled Dentistry – Designation system for teeth and areas of the oral cavity. Established by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and prepared by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 106 “Dentistry”, this standard provides a comprehensive, two-digit coding system to designate both individual teeth and areas of the oral cavity. It supersedes the earlier 2009 version to address modern clinical, educational, and digital communication needs in dentistry.
The system is designed to be simple, easy to teach, intuitive to pronounce, and compatible with computer input-facilitating global compatibility and enabling efficient dental communication in both print and electronic formats. It also supports identification of dental anomalies with a consistent coding method.
Key Topics
-
Two-Digit Coding System:
- The first digit indicates the quadrant and differentiates deciduous (primary) from permanent teeth.
- The second digit specifies the tooth or oral cavity area within that quadrant.
-
Quadrants and Sextants:
- Quadrants divide the oral cavity into four parts: upper right, upper left, lower left, and lower right.
- Sextants further divide into six segments including anterior and lateral oral regions.
-
Designation of Oral Areas:
- Codes with zeros relate to oral cavity areas, e.g., "00" for entire oral cavity, "01" for maxillary (upper jaw) area, "02" for mandibular (lower jaw) area.
- Example: "10" = upper right quadrant, "40" = lower right quadrant.
-
Designation of Teeth:
- Permanent teeth use digits 1 to 4 in the first digit; deciduous teeth use 5 to 8.
- Tooth numbering starts at the midline of the dental arch, moving distally (toward the back).
- Second digit 1 through 8 for permanent teeth (central incisor to third molar) and 1 through 5 for deciduous teeth.
-
Anomalies Indication:
- Replacement of zero (0) by nine (9) in codes indicates an anomaly in that designated area or tooth.
Applications
The SIST EN ISO 3950:2016 standard applies extensively across dental disciplines and practices, including:
-
Clinical Dentistry: Ensures uniform dental charting, patient records, and treatment documentation.
-
Dental Education and Training: Facilitates teaching anatomy and dental notation to students worldwide with a standardized approach.
-
Digital Dentistry and IT: Provides a standardized, computer-friendly code for electronic health records (EHRs), dental practice management systems, and tele-dentistry tools.
-
Research and Public Health: Supports consistent data collection for epidemiological studies and global health monitoring.
-
International Communication: Facilitates cross-border exchange of dental information among professionals by offering a universally accepted language of tooth and oral cavity designation.
Related Standards
-
ISO 1942 Dentistry - Vocabulary: Complements EN ISO 3950 by providing dental terminology essential for understanding and applying the designation system.
-
ISO/IEC Directives Part 1 and 2: Provide guidelines on the development and maintenance of ISO standards like EN ISO 3950.
-
FDI World Dental Federation Notations: The system integrates principles originally developed by FDI and endorsed by the World Health Organization for universal dental notation use.
