ISO 4126-7:2013 specifies requirements for safety valves. It contains information which is common to ISO 4126-1 to ISO 4126-6 to avoid unnecessary repetition.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 4126-7:2013 - Safety devices for protection against excessive pressure - Part 7: Common data (ISO 4126-7:2013) provides the common data and requirements used across ISO 4126 Parts 1–6. Its purpose is to avoid unnecessary repetition by centralizing definitions, symbols, units, calculation guidance and general requirements that apply to safety valves and related pressure-relief devices. The document was prepared by ISO/TC 185 in collaboration with CEN/TC 69 and supersedes the 2004 edition. It also includes informative alignment with the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED).
Key Topics
EN ISO 4126-7:2013 addresses core technical subjects that support consistent design, sizing and verification of safety valves and related devices:
- Terms and definitions specific to safety valves and pressure-relief devices, with the bar as a primary pressure unit.
- Symbols and units used consistently across ISO 4126 parts.
- Determination of safety valve performance, including methods for assessing coefficient of discharge, critical and subcritical flow regimes, and discharge capacity at critical flow.
- Sizing of safety valves: general principles, special considerations for gas/vapour relief and capacity calculation guidance.
- Thermodynamic properties: steam data, factors related to specific heat ratio (k), compressibility factor (Z) and correction factors (including viscosity corrections).
- Limitations: cautionary guidance when using ideal gas formulas - not recommended when relieving temperature > 90% of critical temperature or relieving pressure > 50% of critical pressure; condensation effects are not considered in that method.
- Mechanical requirements: minimum requirements for helical compression springs and disc springs (materials, marking, dimensions, inspection and tolerances).
- Annexes and examples: practical capacity calculation examples and bibliography for further reference.
- Regulatory relationship: informative Annex ZA linking the standard to Essential Requirements of EU Directive 97/23/EC (PED).
Applications
This standard is practical for professionals involved in pressure-relief systems and pressure equipment safety:
- Valve manufacturers - for design consistency and product documentation.
- Process and mechanical engineers - to size and select safety valves for vessels, boilers, piping and tanks.
- Plant safety and maintenance teams - for verifying performance and replacement specifications.
- Regulatory, conformity and inspection bodies - for demonstrating presumption of conformity with PED when applicable.
- Consultants and system integrators - for specifying relief devices in chemical, petrochemical, power, oil & gas and general industrial installations.
Related Standards
EN ISO 4126-7:2013 complements other parts of the ISO 4126 series:
- ISO 4126-1 (Safety valves)
- ISO 4126-2 (Bursting disc devices)
- ISO 4126-4 (Pilot-operated safety valves)
- ISO 4126-5 (Controlled safety pressure relief systems)
- ISO 4126-6 (Application/installation of bursting discs)
- ISO 4126-10/11 and other parts addressing two-phase flow, testing and application guidance
