ISO 4254-11:2010, intended to be used together with ISO 4254-1, specifies the safety requirements and their verification for the design and construction of self-propelled and trailed pick-up balers, including the combination of pick-up balers with wrappers, independent of the shape or size of the bales formed. It describes methods for the elimination or reduction of hazards arising from the intended use and reasonably foreseeable misuse of these machines by one person (the operator) in the course of normal operation and service. In addition, it specifies the type of information on safe working practices to be provided by the manufacturer. ISO 4254-11:2010, taken together with ISO 4254-1, deals with all the significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to self-propelled and trailed pick-up balers, including the combination of pick-up balers with wrappers, when they are used as intended and under the conditions of misuse that are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer. ISO 4254-11:2010 is not applicable to pedestrian-controlled round balers, environmental hazards, road safety, vibration and hazards related to moving parts for power transmission. It is not applicable to hazards related to maintenance or repairs carried out by professional service personnel.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 4254-11:2010 - Agricultural machinery: Safety - Part 11: Pick-up balers specifies safety requirements and verification methods for the design and construction of self‑propelled and trailed pick‑up balers, including combinations of pick‑up balers with wrappers. Intended to be used together with ISO 4254‑1, this standard addresses hazards arising from intended use and reasonably foreseeable misuse by a single operator during normal operation and service. It supports conformity with the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC (see Annex ZA) and supersedes EN 704:1999+A1:2009.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Covers self‑propelled and trailed pick‑up balers of any bale shape/size and their combination with wrappers.
- Not applicable to pedestrian‑controlled round balers, environmental hazards, road safety, vibration, power‑transmission guarding, or maintenance by professional service personnel.
- Safety requirements and protective measures
- General safety design principles to eliminate or reduce hazards (risk reduction in line with ISO 12100).
- Specific provisions for feeding systems (including auger‑type feeders), automatic starting systems, manual twine feeding, knife changing, blockage clearing, and bale ejection doors.
- Verification
- Procedures for verifying that safety requirements and protective measures are implemented and effective.
- Information for use
- Machine types
- Distinct requirements for rectangular and round balers where relevant.
- Standards relationships
- To be applied together with ISO 4254‑1; guarding of power‑transmission moving parts is handled in ISO/TS 28923/28924 and EN 15811.
Practical Applications
- Manufacturers and design engineers use EN ISO 4254‑11:2010 to design safe pick‑up balers, integrate wrappers, and document compliance for CE marking.
- Safety and compliance teams use it for risk assessments, verification testing, and preparing operator manuals and safety markings.
- Buyers, specifiers and procurement professionals reference the standard to define safety requirements in tender documents.
- Certification bodies and test laboratories apply the standard during conformity assessment and type‑approval activities.
- Farm operators and fleet managers benefit indirectly via safer machine designs and improved operating instructions.
