ISO 4375:2014 defines the requirements for equipment, anchorage, supports and accessories for cableway systems for use in stream gauging. Systems which are operated either entirely from the river bank or from a suspended personnel carriage (also called a "cable car") are discussed. Should the cableway installation be required to be certified as lifting equipment, other standards or regulations may apply. ISO 4375:2014 is only applicable to the cableway systems to be used for hydrometric measurements.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 4375:2014 - Hydrometry: Cableway systems for stream gauging (ISO 4375:2014) defines requirements for the design, components, anchorage, supports and accessories of cableway systems used specifically for stream gauging and other hydrometric measurements. It covers systems operated entirely from the river bank (bankside systems) and systems using a suspended personnel carriage (cable car). The standard is limited to hydrometric use; if a cableway must be certified as lifting equipment, additional lifting regulations or standards may apply.
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
EN ISO 4375:2014 addresses the full cableway lifecycle from design to testing, including:
- Elements of a cableway system: towers/supports, main track or main cable, anchorage, backstays, suspension and tow cables, instrument and personnel carriages, winch arrangements.
- Functional requirements: selection criteria for main cables/tracks and tow/suspension cables, carriage design, winch arrangements and lightning protection considerations.
- Safety factors and stability: specifies use of appropriate safety factors for components and overall system design (standard references safety factors without prescribing unrelated regulatory certification).
- Anchorage and supports: requirements for anchor points, tower foundations and backstay arrangements to resist induced loads.
- Operation differences: practical design distinctions between bankside systems (often using tow loops or spooled tow cables) and personnel-carriage systems (higher safety and platform requirements).
- Maintenance, inspection and testing: routines and periodic examinations, static testing, lubrication, and procedures for checking sag and cable tensions.
- Informative annexes: cableway characteristics and guidance on limiting main cable tension for bankside systems.
Practical Applications
This standard is used to specify, install and maintain cableway systems for:
- Measuring river discharge and flow profiles
- Deploying current meters, sounding weights and other hydrometric instruments
- Providing safe working platforms for river surveys when a personnel carriage is required
- Designing permanent or temporary gauging installations across open channels and rivers
Using EN ISO 4375:2014 helps ensure reliable field measurements, safer installations and consistent equipment selection for hydrometry projects.
Who Should Use This Standard
- Hydrometric and river monitoring agencies
- Civil and hydraulic engineers designing gauging installations
- Instrument and cableway manufacturers and suppliers
- Field technicians responsible for installation, inspection and maintenance
- Consultants preparing specifications for hydrometric infrastructure
Related Standards
- ISO 772 (Hydrometry - Vocabulary and symbols)
- ISO 80000-4 (Quantities and units - Mechanics)
- ISO 748 (Methods for discharge measurement) - for the measurement methods performed using cableways
- National/regulatory lifting-equipment standards may also apply if certification as lifting gear is required
