ISO 4629-1:2016 specifies a titrimetric method for determining the free hydroxyl groups in binders and binder solutions for paints and varnishes. The hydroxyl groups may be present as polyhydric alcohols, partial esters, polyester end groups or hydroxylated fatty acids. This method is not applicable to resins containing both hydroxyl groups and epoxy groups, because the latter will also be included in the result. Also the method is not applicable to cellulose nitrate or to phenolic resins. NOTE 1 If, in the case of binder solutions, the hydroxyl value of the binder only is to be determined, the possibility that other constituents of the binder solution may contain hydroxyl groups has to be taken into account. NOTE 2 A method for the determination of the hydroxyl value of epoxy resins is specified in ISO 7142[1].
Abstract
Overview
SIST EN ISO 4629-1:2016 defines a standardized titrimetric method for determining the hydroxyl value in binders and binder solutions used for paints and varnishes. The hydroxyl value measures the content of free hydroxyl groups, which can be present in forms such as polyhydric alcohols, partial esters, polyester end-groups, or hydroxylated fatty acids. This standard, published by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), aligns with ISO 4629-1:2016 and is essential for quality control and specification compliance in industrial coatings and paint applications. The method described does not require a catalyst and is not applicable to resins containing both hydroxyl and epoxy groups, cellulose nitrate, or phenolic resins.
Key Topics
- Hydroxyl Value Determination: The standard outlines procedures for the accurate measurement of free hydroxyl groups in binder systems without catalyst use.
- Titrimetric Method: Hydroxyl groups are acetylated, and excess reagents are quantified by titration, either using color indicators or potentiometric methods.
- Sample Selection and Preparation: Guidance on selecting appropriate test portions based on expected hydroxyl content.
- Accuracy and Precision: Instructions for repeat determinations to ensure reliability, including blank tests and considerations for statistical deviation.
- Reporting Requirements: Specifies essential reporting elements-test method used, sample details, observed anomalies-to ensure traceability and reproducibility.
Applications
SIST EN ISO 4629-1:2016 is vital in several industrial and commercial contexts:
- Paints and Varnishes Production: Ensures quality and consistency of binders used in manufacturing, directly impacting the performance of finished products.
- Resin and Polymer Synthesis: Used by manufacturers to monitor the chemical composition and reactivity of raw materials and intermediates.
- Quality Control Laboratories: Standardizes internal and external quality assurance protocols, helping producers meet regulatory and customer specifications.
- Product Development: Supports research and development by providing reliable data on binder chemistry, enabling formulation optimization for new paints and varnishes.
- Supplier Certification and Compliance: Facilitates supplier and customer alignment on product quality by referencing internationally recognized methods.

SIST EN ISO 4629-1:2016 plays a crucial role in standardizing the analysis of hydroxyl values, promoting efficiency, quality assurance, and international compatibility within the coatings, polymer, and chemicals industries. By following this standard, organizations enhance product performance, guarantee specification adherence, and maintain consistency across global supply chains.
