ISO 52016-1:2017 specifies calculation methods for the assessment of: a) the (sensible) energy need for heating and cooling, based on hourly or monthly calculations; b) the latent energy need for (de-)humidification, based on hourly or monthly calculations; c) the internal temperature, based on hourly calculations; d) the sensible heating and cooling load, based on hourly calculations; e) the moisture and latent heat load for (de-)humidification, based on hourly calculations; f) the design sensible heating or cooling load and design latent heat load using an hourly calculation interval; g) the conditions of the supply air to provide the necessary humidification and dehumidification. The calculation methods can be used for residential or non-residential buildings, or a part of it, referred to as "the building" or the "assessed object". ISO 52016-1:2017 also contains specifications for the assessment of thermal zones in the building or in the part of a building. The calculations are performed per thermal zone. In the calculations, the thermal zones can be assumed to be thermally coupled or not. The calculation methods have been developed for the calculation of the basic energy loads and needs, without interaction with specific technical building systems, and for the calculation of the system specific energy loads and needs, including the interaction with specific systems. The hourly calculation procedures can also be used as basis for calculations with more extensive system control options. ISO 52016-1:2017 is applicable to buildings at the design stage, to new buildings after construction and to existing buildings in the use phase. NOTE Table 1 in the Introduction shows the relative position of ISO 52016-1:2017 within the set of EPB standards in the context of the modular structure as set out in ISO 52000-1.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 52016-1:2017 - "Energy performance of buildings - Energy needs for heating and cooling, internal temperatures and sensible and latent heat loads - Part 1: Calculation procedures" (ISO 52016-1:2017) is a CEN-adopted international standard that defines validated calculation methods to determine building heating and cooling energy needs and loads. It covers both hourly and monthly calculation procedures, applies per thermal zone, and can be used for residential and non-residential buildings at design, post-construction or in-use stages. The standard supports consistent building energy performance assessment within the EPB (energy performance of buildings) standards framework.
Key topics and requirements
- Energy needs and loads: Methods to calculate (sensible) energy needs for heating and cooling and latent energy needs for humidification/dehumidification.
- Internal conditions: Calculation of internal temperatures (hourly) and sensible and latent heat loads (hourly), including design loads using hourly intervals.
- Zoning and thermal coupling: Procedures for defining thermal zones, treating zones as thermally coupled or uncoupled, and assessing heat exchange between zones.
- Time resolution: Both hourly and monthly procedures are specified; hourly methods can underpin advanced system control and design calculations.
- System interaction: Methods for basic energy loads (building-only) and system-specific loads that include interaction with HVAC and supply-air conditions.
- Moisture and supply air: Calculation of moisture content, latent heat loads and supply-air conditions required for humidification/dehumidification.
- Inputs and outputs: Guidance on geometrical, thermophysical, operating and boundary data, and required outputs such as heating/cooling needs, peak design loads, and monthly key data.
- Applicability: Suitable for design-stage simulations, new buildings, and existing building energy assessments.
Practical applications and users
EN ISO 52016-1:2017 is used to produce robust, comparable results for:
- HVAC designers and engineers - sizing heating, cooling and dehumidification systems; determining design sensible and latent loads.
- Energy assessors and modelers - compliance checks, energy certification and performance benchmarking.
- Architects and building designers - informing passive design choices and indoor climate targets.
- Policy makers and certification bodies - consistent methodology for national/regional EPB schemes and compliance with EU EPBD-related mandates.
- Building managers - evaluating retrofit scenarios and operational energy needs.
